I've been involved with a company, Sensory Inc., that produces low-cost
neural-net-based ICs for speech recognition. We have sold several million
units and have an 85% market share in dedicated speech recognition chips.
The chip has been used in several dozen applications, including: toys,
electronic learning aids, automobiles, consumer electronics, home appliances,
light switches, telephones, and clocks. Due to cost constraints that limit
RAM and processor speed, performing recognition with alternative approaches
such as HMMs would not be feasible. The company web page sucks, but better
ones are in the works with a listing of current products: www.sensoryinc.com.
Don't blame me for the nonsensical jargon in the company literature.
