                           NEURAP'98

Fourth International Conference on Neural Networks & their Applications

                      March 11-12-13, 1998, Marseille, France

                         CALL FOR PAPERS

                      Deadline: December 1, 1997

                 SPECIAL SESSION AT NEURAP'98

Knowledge-Based Applications of Artificial Neural Networks

This special session aims to address issues concerning the integration
of knowledge-based systems and artificial neural networks. Such hybrid
systems hold the promise of combining the best features of each
approach for constructing intelligent systems. Various strategies can
be envisaged, from the coupling of existing symbolic and connectionist
models to the design of specific models for that purpose. Each of
these strategies underline properties and gives original views of this
new domain, that we wish to discuss and compare during this special
session. We are especially interested in applications of this
technology to real-world problems.

Topics can include, but are not limited to:

- Methods for incorporating prior knowledge into feed-forward
  and recurrent connectionist architectures
- Combination of classical knowledge-based and connectionist models
- Exploration of relationships between symbolic Machine Learning
algorithms, Knowledge Acquisition, Knowledge-Based Systems and
  Knowledge-Based Neural Networks
- Learning algorithms for Knowledge-Based Neural Networks
- Rule extraction and refinement
- Neural expert systems
- Implementation issues: Modularity, Parallel and Distributed
  implementations, etc.
- Applications to real world problems

Instructions:

To ensure a lively conference, all papers will be presented in plenary
session (short presentations) and also through posters. However, to
guarantee the high quality of the presented works, the selection is
based on full paper proposals. Depending on the maturity of the work
presented, there will be short papers for on-going research of 4 pages
long, and long papers for mature research results, up to 8 A4 pages
(double columns, Times 10-point font size). All papers will be printed
in full in the proceedings and must be in English. Please send 4
copies to the conference secretariat before December 1,
1997. Notification will be sent on February 3, 1998 and the
camera-ready version is due on February 20, 1998.

PLEASE NOTE: All papers must be clearly marked indicating inclusion in
this Special Session.
