REGISTRATION INFORMATION
The SMBAS workshop will take place in Sintra, Portugal, beginning on
November 6 afternoon and extending through November 8 afternoon. Three
invited speakers are confirmed (Drs. Walter Freeman, Kumpati Narendra
and Scott Kelso), and a fourth invited speaker may still be
announced. Contributed papers are both from the biological and
artificial systems areas, in approximately equal numbers. The list of
accepted papers is given at the end of this message.
Registrations are open until October 25. Participants who won't
present papers are also welcome. The total number of participants is
limited to 50. Among non-contributors, the registrations will be
accepted on a first come first served basis.
The registration prices are:
Normal registration 50000 Portuguese escudos
Student registration 30000 Portuguese escudos
As an indication only, the current exchange rate is of about 150
Portuguese escudos per US dollar.
The registration price includes participation in the workshop,
proceedings book, lunches on Thursday and Friday and coffee
breaks. The price also includes 17% VAT.
The registration form is included below. Only registrations
accompanied by payment are accepted. Students should also include a
letter from their supervisor or university representative, written on
the university letterhead, confirming their student status.

FUNDING
A grant of 100000 Portuguese escudos from Fundacao Oriente (Portugal)
is available to be assigned to a participant from East
Asia. Preference will be given to students.
Other funding sources, especially the large grant from the Office of
Naval Research (USA), are already reflected in the registration
prices, which would otherwise be about 80000 escudos higher.
LODGING
The workshop will be held at the Hotel Tivoli Sintra. This hotel will
have special room rates for workshop participants:
Single room: 9700 Portuguese escudos per night
Double room: 10900 Portuguese escudos per night (for two persons)
The Tivoli hotel accepts individual registrations for double rooms, at
half the price. In this case the participants will be paired by the
hotel.
The participants should reserve rooms directly with the hotel. Please
mention that you are reserving for this workshop.
