The University of Sydney through its U2000 program has 15
postdoctoral fellowships available for open competition. These fellowships
are for recent PhD graduates (PhD awarded within the last five years or
about to be awarded) who wish to carry out full-time research at the
University of Sydney. The fellowships can be taken at the University's
Neuromorphic Systems Research Group, within the Systems Engineering &
Design Automation Laboratory (SEDAL) at the Department of Electrical
Engineering.
The range of current research activities/projects include:
o Modelling of visual, auditory, olfactory and somatosensory
pathways,
o Modelling of the superior colliculus
o Optical character recognition
o Machine learning
o Auditory localization
o VLSI implementations of neural systems
o Learning on silicon
o Biologically inspired signal processing
The fellowships are available for a minimum of three years, with a
possible further one year extension. They are available from February 1997
and must be taken up by June 1997. Fellowships carry a salary of $A38,092
to $A40,889 and include the cost of return airfare to Sydney (fares for
dependants, and removal expenses, will not be provided) and an initial
setting-up grant for the research project of $A25,000.
Applications close in Sydney on 13 December 1996 and decisions about

the following information:
1.an up-to-date curriculum vitae
2.a list of publications (distinguishing clearly between full
publications and abstracts of papers presented to learned societies)
3.an outline of the proposed research project in no more than two pages
4.the names and addresses of two referees who will be forwarding
testimonials
5.overseas applicants must also provide details (names, ages of
children) of any family members who will accompany the applicant
to Australia, if successful (this information is necessary for the
University to assist with visa arrangements)
