TWO RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS
Neuroscience and AI are areas in which the University of
Sussex is exceptionally strong. A new interdisciplinary
Centre has recently been established to promote synergy
between studies of artificial and biological nervous systems.
Applications are invited for two post-doctoral fellowships to
work in an exciting, interactive and unusual environment in
this interdisciplinary Centre.
POST 1 Computational Modelling of Biological Sensory
Processing
The aim is to understand the neural mechanisms
underlying motion detection. The project will
involve tight coupling of computer modelling and
electrophysiological data. It will feed directly
into our work on robot nervous systems.
POST 2 Artificial Evolution of Nervous Systems for Robots
The aim is to expand the evolutionary robotics
field developed at Sussex by evolving robots with
more complex behavioural capabilities, in particular
to evolve minimally cognitive robots.
Salary will be on the Research and Analogous Faculty Grade 1A
scale 14,317 to 21,519 per annum. The posts are available
immediately and will be for two years in the first instance
with the possibility of renewal.
Informal enquiries are encouraged. Enquiries about Post 1
should be made to Professor Michael O'Shea (Tel +44 (0)1273
678055; Fax +44 (0)1273 678535; email M.O-Shea at sussex.ac.uk)
and for Post 2 to Dr Phil Husbands (Tel +44 (0)1273 678556;
Fax +44 (0)1273 671320; email philh at cogs.susx.ac.uk).

Applications, (curriculum vitae, one or two sample
publications, and the names and addresses of at least two
referees) should be sent to the Administrator, Centre for
Computational Neuroscience and Robotics, School of Biological
Sciences, University of Sussex, Falmer, Brighton, BN1 9QG, UK.
Closing date: 1st October 1996.
