Statistical Modelling and Simulation of Neural Networks

2 Year Research Associate supported by the EPSRC under the
ROPA scheme.

Within the Advanced Computer Architecture Group
Department of Computer Science
University of York, York, Y01 5DD, UK.

Applications are invited for a 2 year post to aimed at
investigating the properties and the application of a novel
neural network method for parallel processing. The work will
involve building probabilistic models and performing
experimental evaluations of the network. The candidates will
be expected to hold a PhD in a relevant subject and have a
good understanding of probability theory and programming in
C. In addition, knowledge of neural networks and parallel
processing would be an advantage, but not essential.

The work will study the properties of a novel form of binary
neural network, based on correlation matrix memories. In a
recent paper (austin 1995 available via WWW and included in
the further particulars), it has been shown how a correlation
matrix memory can be used to recall multiple data items in
parallel. Although the technique has been shown to be feasible,
its practical application requires a thorough analysis of the
networks abilities through statistical modelling and computer
simulation. The modelling is likely to require probabilistic
methods, which will greatly add to the groups work on binary
neural networks. The computer modelling will be undertaken
in C, on the groups extensive network of silicon graphics
machines.

The successful applicant will join a thriving team of over 14
researchers working in neural networks, which specialises in
research on binary weighted neural networks and there
application in computer vision and knowledge based systems.

The project is supported under the UK government ROPA
scheme, and is available immediately for two years.

Applications should be sent to the Personnel Office, University
of York, York, YO1 5DD, POST MARKED by Friday 3rd of November 1995
quoting reference 6616. Applications up to 10th November 1995 will be
accepted, as long as they ARRIVE by that date.
Salary will be up to 15986 U.K
pounds. Further details can be obtained from the Personnel
Office, or by contacting Dr. Jim Austin on 01904 432734,
email austin at minster.york.ac.uk. Further details of the groups
work can be found on the world wide web
