Cognitive Modeling Workshop, July 21-25 '95, Carnegie Mellon University

Please bring this announcement to the attention of appropriate applicants.

We invite applications to attend a 6-day summer workshop on cognitive modeling
to be held in the psychology department at Carnegie Mellon University in
Pittsburgh from July 15 to July 20. The workshop dates have been selected to
enable participants to easily attend the Cognitive Science meetings, which will
be held also in Pittsburgh July 21-25, immediately after the workshop. The
workshop is intended for Ph.D. students, postdocs, and junior faculty with an
active research background in cognitive psychology but with little or no
experience in computer simulation modeling. Participants will be given
intensive practical experience in using 3CAPS, a hybrid symbolic-connectionist
modeling language, which should enable them to apply it in their own domain of
research. 3CAPS' focus is on the central role of working memory in
constraining storage and processing in a variety of cognitive domains,
including mental rotation, text processing, normal and aphasic sentence
comprehension, human computer interaction and automated telephone
interaction. Several tutors will guide participants through excercises in a
computer lab in each of these domains. Participants will also be shown how to
develop a 3CAPS model from scratch. A final component of the program involves
a contrastive analysis, that is, comparison with a related modeling language,
ACT-R, in the area of algebraic problem solving.

Experience in computer modeling is not essential, but some knowledge
of computer programming in general is necessary. Applications should send a
cover letter, and a curriculum vitae, and in the case of graduate students,
arrange for one letter of recommendation. The DEADLINE for application is
March 15, 1995.

The workshop intends to provide room and board and reimburse airfare (if
needed) to all participants who are U.S. residents, and to provide room and
board only for non-U.S participants. Enrollment is competitive and limited
so early application is strongly encouraged. Applicants will be notified
of their acceptance by April 15, 1995.

The workshop is sponsored by the Division of Cognitive and Neural Science and
Technology of the Office of Naval Research. Applications should be sent to:
