How I enjoyed Peter Cariani's comments on rate vs. temporal coding!
In our lab. there are also some data supporting the role of temporal coding,
concerning rat hippocampus and navigation (O'Keefe & Recce, 1993), &
some (simplistic) models of it, combining rate and temporal coding
(Burgess et al., 1993 & 1994). A paper by Nicolelis et al. (1993)
also points to temporal coding in the rat's thalamic representation of
(sensory stimulation to) its face.
