 ABSTRACT:

The thesis proposes a hybrid framework for categorization based on the
framework by Stevan Harnad. First an extensive review is given of the
state of the art in categorization and categorical perception research.
The theory approach to categorization is argued to be the most promising
paradigm. Second, Harnad's framework is treated in which categorical
perception and higher order categorization is combined in one explanation
model. I suggest a way to incorporate the theory approach.
Third, this framework is related to the symbolic/connectionist paradigms.
I argue that a hybrid approach together with a sensori-motor component is
a best option sofar in implementing the framework.
A second part of the thesis investigates the connectionist part of the hybrid
framework. Here neural networks consisting of several CALM Map modules (based
on the Categorization and Learning Module) are trained to learn to topologically
orden lines of various orientations. It is shown that this network exhibits
 categorical perception.
