           NEURAL NET WORKSHOP ANNOUNCEMENT

	"A Decade of Neural Networks:
	Practical Applications and Prospects"
	May 11 - 13, 1994

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Center for Space Microelectronics Technology
(CSMT) is hosting this neural network workshop sponsored by DoD and NASA.
After 10 years of renewed activity in neural network research, the
technology has matured and stands at a crossroads regarding its future
practical applicability. The focus of the workshop is to provide an avenue
for sponsoring agencies, active researchers, and the user community to
formulate a cohesive vision for the next decade of neural network research
and applications. Such a plan will directly address relevance to US
technology competitiveness in the global market. In order to maintain a
balance among the participants, attendance is by invitation only. If
interested in receiving an invitation, please contact Dr. Sabrina Kemeny
(jplnn94 at brain.jpl.nasa.gov) as soon as possible, since space is limited.

The workshop will begin at JPL at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 11, 1994 and
end at 10:00 a.m. on the 13th. Following two plenary sessions on the 11th
and the morning of the 12th, we will split into working groups targeting
three specific application areas. The splinter groups will focus on a
government/industry investment strategy for future neural network research.
The groups will address issues such as: overcoming barriers impeding
technology insertion and creating a better user-developer interface.
Friday's session will include summaries from the splinter groups and a
sponsor-industry assessment panel. A registration fee of $75.00 will
include a welcome reception the first evening, dinner the second evening,
coffee breaks, and a copy of the workshop proceedings.

Invited speakers will highlight clear benefits of neural networks in
real-world applications compared to conventional computing techniques.
Topics such as: fault diagnosis (vehicle engine health monitoring for
automotives), pattern recognition (document analysis), and multiparameter
optimization (unsteady aerodynamic control) will be covered in the
presentations.
