The following two papers, to be presented at the upcoming Cognitive
Science conference in Boulder, have been placed in Jordan Pollack's
Neuroprose archive. Details on how to retrieve the papers, which are
in compressed postscript form, are given at the end of this message.
The papers are short (six pages), as required for inclusion in
the CogSci'93 proceedings. Longer versions of both papers are
currently in preparation:

Boundary effects in the linguistic representations of simple
recurrent networks
Ronan Reilly

Abstract
This paper describes a number of simulations which show that SRN
representations exhibit interactions between memory and sentence and
clause boundaries reminiscent of effects described in the early
psycholinguistic literature (Jarvella, 1971; Caplan, 1972). Moreover,
these effects can be accounted for by the intrinsic properties of SRN
representations without the need to invoke external memory mechanisms
as has conventionally been done.

A Connectionist Attentional Shift Model of Eye-Movement Control in Reading
Ronan Reilly
Department of Computer Science
University College Dublin
Belfield, Dublin 4, Ireland
Abstract
A connectionist attentional-shift model of eye-movement control
(CASMEC) in reading is described. The model provides an integrated
account of a range of saccadic control effects found in reading, such
as word-skipping, refixation, and of course normal saccadic
progression.
