Let me add a couple of comments to the valuable remarks of
Paul Gleichauf.

First, outside the house that the connectionists have built
interesting winds have started to blow. Information processing
has become a central concern of basic physics. This is
evidenced by the projected SYMPOSIUM ON THE FOUNDATIONS OF
MODERN PHYSICS --Quantum Measurement, Irreversibility and the
Physics of Information to be held in Cologne, June 1-5, 1993.

Second, since the famous experiment by Aspect et al to test
Bell's inequality in 1982 it is generally agreed that EPR
correlations appear to be of action-at-a-distance type. Some
assert that "measurements or observations, in the sense
required by quantum theory, can only be made by conscious
observers".

Might the concept of "conscious observer" as used by the qm-theorist
have something to do with the conscious observer at the
back of cognitive centers? This becomes a plausible question.
One is encouraged to think that enlarging the connectionist
paradigm in different ways so as to capture aspects of the
qm framework might be useful. How this might be done needs to
be figured out. In any event getting some fresh air in could
do no harm.

"Should necessity of chance be considered as the cause?"
