1. Conference Dates and Site
The conference will take place Monday through Friday, December
7-11, 1992 at the Ilikai Hotel, Honolulu, Hawaii. The conference will
be inaugerated by a reception on Sunday evening, December 6, and will
be followed by a luau (Hawaiian Feast) on Friday, December 11.

6. Conference Objective
The goal of the conference is to bring together researchers
in ethology, ecology, cybernetics, artificial intelligence,
robotics, and related fields so as to further our understanding
of the behaviors and underlying mechanisms that allow animals
and, potentially, robots to adapt and survive in uncertain
environments.
The conference will focus particularly on simulation models
in order to help characterize and compare various organizational
principles or architectures capable of inducing adaptive behavior
in real or artificial animals.
The conference is expected to promote:
1. Identification of the organizational principles,
functional laws, and minimal properties that make it possible for
a real or artificial system to persist in an uncertain
environment.
2. Better understanding of how and under what conditions
such systems can themselves discover these principles through
conditioning, learning, induction, or self-organization.
3. Specification of the applicability of the theoretical
knowledge thus acquired to the building of autonomous robots.
4. Improved theoretical and practical knowledge of adaptive
systems in general, both natural and artificial.
Contributions treating any of the following topics from the
perspective of adaptive behavior have been invited. The deadline
for submitting papers has passed, but demonstrations will still be
accommodated if possible.

8. Conference Activities
The conference program looks very exciting. In addition to the
many excellent papers listed below, a series of cultural activities
are also planned. The conference begins with a reception on Sunday
evening, December 6. Papers will be presented each morning and late
afternoon with an extended discussion period in between (during which
the beach will be accessible). Thursday evening will be a moonlight
cruise on the Navatek 1 along the shores of Waikiki to Diamond Head.
Friday evening, after the close of the conference will be a luau
(Hawaiian feast) at the Bishop Museum, the premier museum of culture
and natural history in the Pacific. Museum admission is included in
the luau price as is a planetarium show, dinner, refreshments, and
local entertainment.
9. Registration
All participants must register. Regular registration is
$220 and late registration is $250. Students will be allowed to
register for $50. Students should submit proof of their status
along with their registration fee. The fee for accompanying
persons is $75, which includes the reception and the cruise. A

10. Meeting Site
The conference activities will be held at the Ilikai Hotel.
The Ilikai is situated at the gateway to Waikiki within walking
distance of many fine restaurants, Ala Moana Shopping Center, and
Ala Moana Park. The Hotel overlooks the Ala Wai Yacht Marina
where Waikiki Beach begins. Room rates for the conference are
$110 or $125 per night (single or double). The hotel is adjacent
to the beach and also offers two swimming pools, a fitness
center, and tennis courts. Reservations must be made directly
with the hotel. Conference rates will be available for the
weekend before and the weekend following the conference as well.

Arrangements have been made for a small number of student
rooms in a nearby hotel at about $55 per night (single or
double). Students are, of course, welcome to stay in the
conference hotel. Reservations for student rooms can be made
through the official travel agent. A small number of travel
"scholarships" may be available to defray part or all of the
expenses of attending the conference. Interested students should
submit a letter of application describing their research
interests, the year they expect to receive their degree, and a
brief letter of recommendation from their major professor. The
number and size of awards will depend on the amount of money
available.

information on accessibility. Advance notice is advised if you
have special needs and request an accommodation. The University

Participants are encouraged, but not required, to make their
travel arrangements through Ms Stahl. United Airlines is
offering a special conference rate for participants from US as
well as European, Japanese, and Australian gateway cities served
by United. Ms Stahl is very knowledgeable about the local travel
market and can make arrangements to visit neighbor islands
(including Hawaii with its active volcano) and for other
activities.
Please make your travel arrangements early because Hawaii is
a popular destination in December and the conference is scheduled
just before the start of the busiest season. Hertz has extended
a conference rate for auto rentals. Reservations can be made
through the official travel agent or directly through Hertz.
