The result that it is beneficial to teach a simple recurrent network
a difficult grammar by staring with a short form is already well
known (but unfortunately not cited in Jeff Elman's recently
announced TR).
My research was described to Jay McClelland's research group in
November 1988, it was presented at the ACM Computer Science
Conference (Adaptive Training of Connectionist State Machines,
Louisville, Feb. 1989, page 428), it has been reported to this
interest group several times, and it is summarized in:
Allen, R.B., Connectionist Langauge Users, Connection Science, vol. 2,
279-311, 1990.
I would be happy to distribute a reprint of this paper to anyone who
requests one.
