hi,
David J. Burr (in 'Experiments on NN Recognition of Spoken and Written Text,
suggests that NN and Nearest neighbor classification performs at near the same
level of accuracy, IEEE Trans on ASSP, vol 36, #7,pp1162-68, july 88)
My own experience with character recognition using neural nets actually
suggests that NN have better performance than nearest neighbor and hierarchical
clustering, (I suggest to talk to Prof. Kelvin Wagner, ECE, UC-Boulder)

Trans in Neural Net, March 90, pp 28 by M.W. Roth.
