I posted the request for a character recognition bibliography to
connectionists at cs.cmu.edu, vision-list at ads.com, and to the usenet newsgroup
comp.ai.neural-nets. I will post a summary of the responses on all of these
mailing lists/newsgroups. 

Although I prefer the bibtex format, any format will do.
