It is worth $10.5 million (to be spent over 3 years). It aims at pushing the boundaries of applied AI to new levels of utility, with the primary focus on boosting AI-driven predictive maintenance of equipment capabilities for the US Army. A significant portion of this funding will support fundamental research in the subareas of ML of our current active interest, and the results will be relevant to many fields of application outside of the primary focus mentioned above, including the societally important domains of healthcare or public safety we have been traditionally pursuing in the Lab. In order to accomplish the goals, we will share the joy (and funding :p ) with two teams of internal collaborators led by Prof. Steve Smith of the RI and Prof. Mario Berges of CEE at CIT, as well as 3 external teams including Georgia Tech Research Institute, University of South Carolina, and University of California at Davis. This is a robust and diverse group - working together will certainly be not just rewarding but also a highly entertaining experience. Many of us will be involved in this work. Some of you may very soon hear from me, Kyle Miller (who serves as a Co-Principal Investigator for this project) and/or Charlotte Emig (cc-d), who will help coordinate the efforts as the Project Manager, as we will be gearing up for the formal kickoff of the activities. We will also be looking to hire new talent at all levels of experience, including programmers, analysts, and staff researchers; and we will be looking to engage with new undergraduate and graduate students already at CMU Please let me and Kyle know of any candidates we should consider and encourage the external ones to apply for job openings available at the CMU HR site for Research Programmers and Project Scientists (our ads are easy to find by searching for "auton"). Also, please do not hesitate to ask Kyle or I for more details regarding this outstanding research opportunity. Good times!
