Nick and I will be leading the organization of it. I think we are okay resource-wise, but please do not hesitate to let us know if you'd like to help. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... My message only concerns lab members who have Auton Lab issued workstations. Could you please restart your OpenVPN clients and remount NFS shares? As a root # systemctl restart openvpn-client at autonlab # mount -a I had to increase the current maximum number of allowed VPN clients from 30 to 50 on the server side due to the massive influx of RISS interns and new employees. After editing the configuration file I had to restart the OpenVPN server and break existing UDP encrypted tunnels. Mentoring Workshop for Graduate Student Today: Thursday, June 2nd 2-3:30 in NSH 4305 (full details below - register or show up!) This workshop is led by a SCS graduate student team investigating intern undergraduate research experiences - The DPAC Undergraduate Research Working Group. ** RISS update: The scholars are here - orientation went smoothly. Roboorg has planned a social event for the scholars for late Friday afternoon and the scholars themselves are already in teams. Please share the details below with graduate students from your group. All are welcome! (Many thanks to the team that designed this new resource and is holding this conversation!) ANNOUNCEMENT Workshop for Graduate Students Mentoring During their studies, grad students often mentor undergraduates on research projects. However, doing research and supervising research are two different skills and the former doesn?t necessarily teach you everything required for the latter. To help ease this transition, the DPAC Undergraduate Research Working Group is holding a Graduate Mentorship Workshop on Thursday, June 2nd from 2-3:30 in NSH 4305. Our goal in this interactive workshop is to give you a set of tools to maximize the quality of the outcomes of the projects you supervise. We?ll be covering several topics, including: - What structures are useful for organizing a research project? - How does one scope projects? - How do you clearly communicate and align objectives with an advisee? If interested, please fill out this RSVP Form ! Finally, if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to dpac-ure-wg at andrew.cmu.edu. His new book, titled "Data Structures the Fun Way: From Binary Search to QuadTrees in 100 Cups of Coffee", is to be released in the Fall (you can already preorder it on amazon). Jeremy is renowned for authoring clever introductions to computing and algorithms for school children. If you have or plan to have a kid, or just to prepare for such possibility in the future, you should brace for it by getting your and your childrens' hands on all of the following terrific pieces of art: "Computational Fairy Tales" (2012) "Best Practices of Spell Design" (2013) "The CS Detective: An Algorithmic Tale of Crime, Conspiracy, and Computation" (2016) As you know, at the Auton Lab we are permanently hungry for talented young people, so I am very grateful to Jeremy for giving us tools to grow such talent in-the-house. As a follower of his literary talent, I am noticing that Jeremy traces his original audience as it matures: the newest book seems to be meant for grown ups. I am sure it will be a fun read, and maybe we could read it together in our "Code & Coftea" meetings at the Lab. Or, better yet, we will ask the author to read it for us :-) Way to go Jeremy! It appears that ZFS datasets /zfsauton/data and /zfsauton/project are 100% full. They were less than 80% full 10-15 days ago. That is a problem as the ZFS pool will not be able to heal in the case of a dead HDD. I checked the snapshots and it appears that deleting them will not get us out of the hole. A rudimental familiarity with ZFS file system/volume manager is expected from the Lab members. https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E26505_01/html/E37384/index.html It seems that some lab members are making unsubstantiated assumptions about the file system and infrastructure as a whole instead of relying on the documentation. I can expand the ZFS pool hosting those two datasets but not until I am back to the office. Best, Predrag -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It will be primarily targeting our largest-than-ever cohort of summer interns, who come from various backgrounds to work with us at the Lab on various ML or ML-related projects. But everyone is welcome. In particular if you are a relatively new member of our team and in the process of immersing yourself into the ways of thinking about ML and AI, you could find attending this meeting quite useful. Topics I am thinking about covering today: * Basic ML tasks * Challenge of overfitting and how to mitigate the risk of it * Challenges caused by random data and how to mitigate them * Empirical evaluation of classifiers: ROC, McNemar's test Let me know if you think we should adjust that menu or if we should cover more topics. We may arrange more sessions like this over the summer, and I will be happy to share the floor with willing volunteer speakers as well. This will be a hybrid meeting in NSH 3305 and on zoom (Meeting ID: 94267966836 Passcode: 960534). I plan to join in person.
