MATLAB starts huge number of processes

Starting a simple instance of matlab on the servers creates about 50
processes. The old tricks (OMP_NUM_THREADS=1,MKL_NUM_THREADS=1,
NUMEXPR_NUM_THREADS=1) don't seem to work.

Anyone else have this issue and found a solution?
