[auton-users] Do you use VNC ?

Hi Everyone.

I know many of you have been using ssh tunnelling and VNC on the various
compute machines in order to maintain persisting sessions.

From now on, VNC sessions will only be run on LOP1. This is being done
to reduce the statefulness of the rest of the compute nodes, and to
further the resdesignation of LOP1 as the access node to the rest of the
nodes.

A major change with this new environment is that we will no longer be
using the GNOME desktop as the desktop environment under VNC. It is too
heavy and provides needless functionality. We will be using a
lightweight window manager (WM) called Fluxbox as the default desktop
unless software incompatibilities force us to use a different WM.

If you plan to use VNC to keep a persistent session on the LOPs, please
email me. I will setup the session in such a way (using a daemon) that
your session will always be running on the same port, even after reboots
of the server. This will make it easier to tunnel the port since it
won't change every time you start a session from user space.

VNC will be set up by request only. I will be using default screen
resolutions of 1024x768 @ 16 bit color depth as the default. If you
prefer another resolution, please include that with your request.
