Within the next month we plan to have the LOP, LOQ, LOR, and LOS compute machines upgraded to CentOS 4.2 x86_64. This provides the same levels of performance and memory addressing as the old Gentoo setup did, and adds enhanced maintainability. Or current Gentoo profile is set to expire early in February, so now is the time to get everything upgraded. We are already running CentOS 4 x86_64 on Lop2 and Loq3. If you want to familiarize yourself, you can use these machines. If anyone has reason to believe that we need to keep the legacy Gentoo setup installed anywhere, or if you have any other concerns or questions about the upgrade, please feel free to IM/ EMail/ or Call. -Mike -- Michael J. You no longer need a second password to access it. It may be reached from either of the two following addresses: http://www.autonlab.org/status/ http://www.autonlab.org/auton_intranet/status.html You now only need your Intranet password. If you do not have or do not know your password, Adam or myself can help you get setup. -Mike From mjbaysek at cs.cmu.edu Thu Jan 12 12:22:29 2006 From: mjbaysek at cs.cmu.edu (Michael J. The downtime is expected to be 2 hours. If your CVSROOT is set to use LOP1, and you will need CVS during this time, you will need to change your CVSROOT to LOP2. You can make this change now, if you like, and change it back tomorrow. Thanks -- Michael J. Keep this in mind if your programs misbehave. 2) CCache is enabled systemwide by default. This will speed recompilation of your programs. To learn more about CCache, and how to use it to your advantage, visit http://www.autonlab.org/auton_intranet/docs/ccache.html 3) During the upgrade process, a few ssh keys were lost. You will receive a message stating that "REMOTE HOST IDENTIFICATION CHANGE" when you connect to LOQ1, LOR1, LOS1, or LINA. Simply open up your ~/.ssh/known_hosts file and remove all lines containing those machines, and this will allow you to connect. If you have any questions or feedback, please let me know! -Mike -- Michael J. This new reservation type allows us to specify the priority of a job over (or under) other jobs that may later be running on a machine. Most of you know you can run your jobs nicely when you have a low priority job to run. This is great except we don't always remember to do this. One thing you could not previously do is specify to the machine that your job is _more_ important that other jobs running on the system. This is what we now have the ability to do. This reservation type does not reserve the entire machine to you, and therefore should not be used for timing jobs. It simply ensures that you will have priority access to resources if the machines are under heavy load. Technical details -------------------------------------------------------------------- Hourly, a process scans a machine for jobs that match predefined criteria and renice them to match the system policy. If your job is listed as high priority, it will be elevated to high priority status at the top of the hour. Using this New Feature -------------------------------------------------------------------- To take advantage of this feature you need to have your job registered into the system. This is something that I can do for you. I will need to know the format of how your job appears in a ps auxw statement. The system policy is automatically propogated to all of the lop, loq, lor, and los machines, so it will be effective on any machine you decide to run on. -- Michael J.
