I wonder whether I could reserve lira from tomorrow until next Tuesday? Thanks a lot. It did have some filesystem corruption on the AFS cache partition, and while fsck claims to have fixed it, if any of you notice anything unusual while doing AFSage on lime, let me know. Also, in case you haven't gotten andrew's away message, it looks like he's out of town until the middle of next week, so if you have any compute jobs, lime's available. I have been informed that she still has some conference experiments to run, and would appreciate it if we kept on of lira's CPUs free. At present we do not have an easy way to enforce a reservation of one cpu, so please be curteous and avoid tying up lira's second cpu. If you do use lira's second cpu, please try to avoid long-running experiments on it. -Paul Komarek From pgunn at cs.cmu.edu Tue Nov 18 17:15:52 2003 From: pgunn at cs.cmu.edu (Pat Gunn) Date: Tue, 18 Nov 2003 17:15:52 -0500 (EST) Subject: [auton-users] gloom to be cleaned, upgraded to Fedora 1 Message-ID: Hello, On the off chance any of you have used gloom, the (very low-powered) redhat 8 box in the lab, it's going down sometime this week to be reinstalled running RedHat Fedora 1.0 -- Pat Gunn Research/Systems Programmer, Auton Group, CMU From dpelleg+ at cs.cmu.edu Sun Nov 23 08:54:07 2003 From: dpelleg+ at cs.cmu.edu (Dan Pelleg) Date: Sun, 23 Nov 2003 08:54:07 -0500 Subject: [auton-users] go easy on BigPapa Message-ID: <16320.48127.831513.797910@localhost.localdomain> FYI, we had a drive failure on the main NFS disk array. It is RAID-ed in a way that it's still fully functional, and we have kept it online. However, until we install a replacement drive, it is more susceptible to failures. If you are running jobs which write a lot to the NFS directory, the most responsible thing to do would be to stop or suspend them. We expect everything to be back in working order within 48 hours. From dpelleg+ at cs.cmu.edu Mon Nov 24 19:16:57 2003 From: dpelleg+ at cs.cmu.edu (Dan Pelleg) Date: Mon, 24 Nov 2003 19:16:57 -0500 Subject: [auton-users] update on BigPapa Message-ID: <16322.40825.900308.396580@localhost.localdomain> An update on the NFS server situation. We are seeing more drive failures, and indications that even more drives will fail soon. Thanks to an incredible effort by Jacob over the last two nights, the NFS directory is still online and is served from a backup disk array. We are working on a purchase order for a new set of drives with which we will resurrect the main disk array. In the meantime, the directories are still there, and we still have backups. If there is work you need to do, go ahead and use them. But you should be cautious about putting single copies of new data on NFS: we are increasing the frequency of backups, but should the backup array fail, we have no way to serve the data until new hardware arrives. So it won't be lost in the sense that you will never be able to access it, however in the short term it will be generally inaccessible. In the meantime, let's thank Jacob for keeping things running against all odds. He literally stayed up whole nights. Last note: we are shopping for new IDE drives. If you can share good or bad experience about commodity IDE drives in the 120-250GB range, now would be a good time to do this by way of posting to admin at autonlab.org.
