We have watched the lab computers for a bit, and it doesn't seem that any body is running anything anywhere. We also aren't seeing any network traffic from physics or elsewhere. Therefore we are shutting down the lab for (most of) today (Sunday, 8 Sep. 2002). -Paul Komarek From komarek at andrew.cmu.edu Thu Sep 26 14:11:29 2002 From: komarek at andrew.cmu.edu (Paul Komarek) Date: Thu, 26 Sep 2002 14:11:29 -0400 (EDT) Subject: [auton-users] Changes in Lab Network Message-ID: Hello, We recently made several changes to the internal network for the autonlab. The machines we maintain (alphas, mail server, web server, etc) now use private internet address. They communicate with the cs network via Network Address Translation (NAT). If you were able to use X remotely via xhost, then we'd like to get some information from you. =-) Since you're using ssh to connect (correct?), try using the -X flag to enable remote X stuff via ssh. ssh -X foo at bar -Paul > > I don't use emacs, or xclock or whatever from auton, but > I do use some Java based tools for the SDSS data that > need to run under an X-window script.... > > Any ideas? > > Chris > > > From komarek at andrew.cmu.edu Mon Sep 30 12:17:33 2002 From: komarek at andrew.cmu.edu (Paul Komarek) Date: Mon, 30 Sep 2002 12:17:33 -0400 (EDT) Subject: [auton-users] Changes in Lab Network In-Reply-To: <3D986E35.50701@cmu.edu> Message-ID: On Mon, 30 Sep 2002, Chris Miller wrote: > Paul Komarek wrote: > > > > >We've never allowed xhost, because it's very insecure as the X protocol is > >not encrypted or particularly-well authenticated. The localhost line had been removed from /etc/hosts at some point (dunno when or why). I put it back. Same for lazy. Liver, mysteriously, had already been corrected. Let me know if this doesn't solve the problems you're experiencing below. I'd much rather get this to work on the GNU/Linux Alphas than fool with tcl/tk on Tru64. =-) -Paul > > The application I need to run requires Tcl/Tk v 8 or higher.
