Hi Andrew,
My version of the password editing is much simpler than Dan's, and likely
to start a flame war.
1) emacs /etc/passwd and do the stuff with the awm line as Dan suggests
Done with that part. You don't need to worry about the shadow file
because it's only relevant to passwords and account expiry stuff. Also,
there's no need to use vipw, because there are no (real) race conditions
to worry about.
Then do the rest of the stuff Dan discussed.
