Dear all,

We look forward to seeing you next *Wednesday (10/30) from 12:00-1:00 PM
(ET) *for a special talk of this semester's CMU AI Seminar, sponsored
by SambaNova
Systems <https://sambanova.ai>. The seminar will be held in* NSH 4305* with
pizza provided and will be streamed on Zoom.
*Please note the time, as earlier announcements were incorrect.*

To learn more about the seminar series or to see the future schedule,
please visit the seminar website (http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~aiseminar/).

Next Wednesday (10/30), Michael Wornow (Stanford) will be giving a talk
titled "Foundation Models for Electronic Health Records (EHRs)".

*Abstract*: Hospitals generate an average of 50 petabytes of data per year.
Unfortunately, little of this data is used to improve patient care, and it
shows; despite spending over $4 trillion on healthcare annually, the US
ranks dead last in health outcomes among high-income countries. Foundation
models — large-scale AI models trained on large amounts of unlabeled data —
offer a promising approach for harnessing this data to improve the efficacy
of our healthcare system. In this talk, I will motivate the need for
developing foundation models for electronic health records (EHRs),
highlight some work in the space, and outline key unsolved challenges and
opportunities for ML researchers hoping to make a meaningful impact on
patients with their work.

*Bio*: Michael Wornow <https://michaelwornow.net/> is a Ph.D. candidate in
computer science at Stanford University, where he is advised by Nigam Shah
and Chris Ré. His research focus is on developing and operationalizing AI
models in healthcare. He graduated summa cum laude from Harvard in 2020
with a double major in Computer Science and Statistics, and is fortunate
to be supported by an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship and Stanford HAI
Graduate Fellowship.
