Spring 2026 Special Workshop on the Futures of Cognitive Architectures and
the ACT-R Ecosystem
May 20-22, Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC), Pensacola,
Florida

This special 3-day workshop is in the tradition of the Post-Graduate Summer
Schools held in 2001, 2011, and 2016 to chart the path forward for the
ACT-R cognitive architecture. Topics include community issues such as
incentives for contributions, sustainable funding, and governance
structure, as well as technical issues such as scalable implementations,
alternative workflows, and application to other disciplines. The goal of
the workshop is to elaborate actionable plans for future growth. The format
will encourage active engagement: presentations to frame issues,
facilitated discussions, brainstorming in breakout groups, and
collaborative working sessions. Morning sessions will be available remotely
while afternoon sessions will be in-person only.

The Florida Institute for Human & Machine Cognition (IHMC) is a
not-for-profit research institute of the State University System of Florida
focused on developing science and technology aimed at leveraging and
extending human cognition, perception, locomotion, performance, and
resilience. IHMC has excellent facilities and ample prior experience
supporting workshops of this type. Pensacola is a beautiful destination
around these dates. A typical day in late May is sunny with a nice breeze
coming in off the Bay, average daytime highs around 85℉ / 29℃ and overnight
lows around 66℉ / 19℃.
