The Interdisciplinary College (IK) is an annual, intense spring school
which offers a dense state-of-the-art course program in neurobiology,
neural computation, cognitive science/psychology, AI, machine learning,
robotics and philosophy. It is aimed at students, postgraduates
and researchers from academia and industry. By combining humanities,
science and technology, the IK endeavours to intensify dialogue between
the various disciplines. Courses include up-to-date introductions to the
main fields of the IK, as well as an in-depth treatment of the focus
topic, which this year is “flexibility”. We will discuss topics ranging
from mental flexibility, to flexibility of the nervous system, to
physical flexibility with dance, to science communication to viewpoint
flexibility through Tibetan monastic debate techniques. The IK is also a
unique social event.

Due to the pandemic, IK will this year take place fully virtually,
which makes it possible for participants from across the world to
join! Participants from all over the world are invited to join online
lecture series, workshops, keynote lectures, panel discussions,
a fishbowl discussion on career development, a virtual poster session,
and plenty of opportunities for social interaction in our virtual
conference venue in gather.town. Design your avatar, enjoy the talks by
and interaction with top-class speakers from multiple disciplines, and
join the crowd for a chat at the virtual fireplace or an online game –
while you are comfortably sitting at home. The scientific program from
4.00 to 8.30 pm CET (with subsequent social interaction
events) will allow participation in this online spring school, while
maintaining regular study or work activities. There will also be
in-person local interaction hubs, pandemic permitting.

Date: 4 to 8 Apr 2022
Location: Groningen, the Netherlands
Fee: € 300 (late fee for registration after 1 Mar will be € 350)

After an enforced two-year covid break, we are excited to announce the
fifth Groningen Spring School on Cognitive Modeling – ACT-R, Nengo,
PRIMs, Discriminative Learning, & Dynamical Systems Modelling
(4 to 8 Apr 2022), with a great lineup of speakers.

The Spring School will again cover four different modeling paradigms:
ACT-R, Nengo, PRIMs, and Discriminative Learning. It thereby offers a
unique opportunity to learn the relative strengths and weaknesses of
these approaches. Moreover, this year we are offering a lecture series
on dynamical systems modelling, which should be interesting for anyone
looking into modeling cognitive dynamics at some or other level of
abstraction. We recommend this lecture series as an excellent
combination with Nengo, for those interested in neuromorphic computing.

The first day will provide an introduction to all five topics. From day
two, spring school students will be asked to commit to one topic, for
which they will attend lectures as well as hands-on tutorials to get
practical experience at working with the paradigm. In addition, students
can sign up for a second topic, for which they will attend lectures
only. All students are invited to join a series of plenary research
talks on the different paradigms.

Pre-registration is now open.

Please feel free to forward the information to anyone who might be
interested in the Spring School.

We are looking forward to welcoming you in Groningen,

The Spring School team

PS: Please note that, due to its interactive character, the spring
school will be held as an offline-only event. We will not offer the
option for hybrid or online teaching. In case the spring school needs to
be cancelled at the last minute, participants will receive a full
reimbursement. For more information, see

2022. We invite writers, researchers, industry practitioners, students,
and anyone interested in creating, using, testing future writing support
technologies to join the conversation. (The first 100 participants get a
free premium subscription to Grammarly and Wordtune!)

We welcome regular papers (8-page), system demos, and relevant papers
previously accepted in another venue.

Important Dates (deadlines are 11:59pm AOE):

Paper submission deadline: 28 Feb 2022

Paper acceptance notification: 26 Mar 2022

  Paper camera-ready deadline: 11 Apr 2022

Workshop date: 26 or 27 May 2022 (TBD)

We invite submissions from the NLP and HCI communities as well as
industry practitioners and professional writers on the topic of
intelligent writing assistants: those that discuss innovations in
building, improving, and evaluating intelligent and interactive writing
assistants.

Specific topics include, but not limited to:

*Combining NLP techniques (e.g. style transfer, text planning,
controllability) with interaction paradigms between users and writing
assistants (e.g. interfaces, iterative processes, feedback), such as a
formality style transfer system for revising professional communications

*Assistance on different stages of the writing process (e.g. planning,
revising), different types of writing (e.g. expository, persuasive), and
different applications (eg journalism, fiction)

*Evaluation methodologies for writing assistants, writing process, and
resultant text

*Addressing underrepresentation of languages, types of writers (e.g.
vernacular variations), and writing tasks for targeted writing
assistance (note that for non-English systems, we request that the
figures and examples be translated into English prior to review)

*Writing assistant ownership issues, including legal issues with
copyright and psychological sense of ownership

*Practical challenges for building real-world systems such as
Grammarly and WordTune (e.g. latency, near-perfect quality,
personalization, and evolution of language)

*User studies or ethnographic studies of writers who use writing
assistants

*Demonstration of simple prototypes of intelligent interfaces or
design sketches

We are excited to announce that the 15th Annual Conference on Artificial
General Intelligence (AGI-22) will be held 21-24 Jun 2022. The event
will once again be conducted as a combined virtual/F2F event due to
continuing travel complications from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This
year, the in-person portion will be in beautiful St. Petersburg, Russia.
The conference website with additional details is
https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fagi-conf.org%2F2022%2F&data=04%7C01%7Ciccm-l%40lists.psu.edu%7Cc719786e960846fed81808da05e68d24%7C7cf48d453ddb4389a9c1c115526eb52e%7C0%7C0%7C637828785010298309%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=YIRyab%2BuI2KOghpw5B%2F8i7Z%2F3VNH29KDY8P%2BHOdL%2FII%3D&reserved=0

As was the case last year, some keynotes will be F2F and some will be
virtual. Authors with accepted contributed papers will have the option
to present their papers either in St. Petersburg or remotely. Based upon
feedback from our initial hybrid conference last year, we will allot
equal time for all contributed papers, whether presented virtually or
in-person.

We find ourselves in especially exciting times as the pace AGI R&D
appears to be rapidly accelerating. My colleagues at the AGI Society and
I are hard at work aligning an amazing program of keynotes, workshops
and tutorials that will complement the contributed talks to make this
year’s AGI conference yet another incredible event.

The schedule, paper submission deadline, keynotes, workshops, physical
venue and other specifics will be announced shortly on the conference.

Best,

lead our institution and nation to positive change. Since 2017, SCI has
hired more than twenty-five faculty members, and we are continuing our
growth with multiple openings in the tenure stream this year. At SCI, we
particularly seek candidates that support our mission in creating,
nurturing, and sustaining an equitable environment that values our
differences and promotes these values within and beyond our school.

The University of Pittsburgh is building a culturally diverse faculty
and strongly encourages applications from women and minority candidates.
SCI is fostering an equitable and inclusive community with our
scholarship, education, and faculty development initiatives, including
policies to promote a healthy work-life balance; programs to meet the
needs of two-career couples; and a commitment to recruit, retain, and
develop a diverse faculty. Candidates whose research, teaching, and
service contribute to the academic diversity of our campus and who have

About the Position

Technology for Learning and Social Change (Assistant Professor) Position
#6096

SCI is seeking to hire a visionary faculty member at the rank of
Assistant Professor in the broad area of Technology for Learning and
Social Change (TLSC). This role requires an interest and prior
experience in the research agenda of advancing technology-oriented
educational, social and racial justice. The position is expected to
engage in active and scholarly research that considers, improves, or
creates state-of-the-art technologies to solve societal problems, deepen
social impact, and improve lives. For this position, we are interested
in the relationship between technology, learning, and the alteration of
mechanisms within the social structure, characterized by changes in
cultural symbols, rules of behavior, social organizations, or value
systems. We seek transdisciplinary researchers who may or may not fit
into traditional departmental structures and are distinguished by
excellence in and dedication to social justice. We are particularly
interested in individuals who work at the intersection of computing and
information with other areas including but not limited to Africana
Studies, Artificial Intelligence, Communications, Computational Social
Science, Education, Educational Psychology, Gender Studies,
Human-Computer Interaction, Law, Learning Sciences, Public Policy,

part of a broader multi-year University of Pittsburgh Race and Social
Determinants of Health and Wellbeing Cluster Hire Initiative, which
seeks to hire at least 50 new faculty over the next four years.

The proposed position will add value to SCI in the following three broad
ways:

1 Position SCI as a national leader in research on advancing
technology-oriented educational, social and racial justice.

2 Enable SCI to better serve the communities in which the University of
Pittsburgh is embedded.

3 Mitigate SCI racial inequities. Hiring faculty that share the goals
of this search is a small step towards mitigating current inequities
embedded in the school and more broadly in academia. Recent reports,
both locally and nationally, have highlighted the racial inequalities in
both recruitments as well as granting tenure and promotion.

industry clients, from shopfloor operators to chronic patients. It’s a
good opportunity for someone who likes the design and research work, but
also to have a say in how research projects should be designed and
oriented. It’s also a good opportunity to be able to publish research
findings, as well as to translate them through rich materials to
non-designers and non-researchers.

The goal of the project is to develop a unifying framework that will
integrate rigorous verification techniques for autonomous systems (AS).
Our framework will support the heterogeneous and adaptive nature of
verification techniques, their scale, and their levels of abstraction.
This is a multi-disciplinary node with expertise in AI, robotics, HCI,
systems and software engineering, and testing in order to realise our
vision in collaboration with the Trustworthy Autonomous Systems Hub and
other Nodes.

The successful candidate will work in the work-package “Closing the

of defining user models of Human-AS collaborative interactions and
validating as well as refining these models in case studies.

Responsibilities
=============

• To develop domain-agnostic human-autonomous system (AS) collaboration
frameworks, modelling user behaviour, task analysis and their
interactions.

• To develop measurement models for evaluating the transparency of
human-AS collaborations with reference to interaction design methods and
to rules, policies and ethics regulating behaviour of autonomous
systems.

• To refine the frameworks and models developed by analysing and
synthesizing the verification results from the system-based studies.

• To apply the refined frameworks and models to a range of specialised
case studies involving different autonomous systems such as chatbots and
drones.

• To organise and engage in research activities with the other TAS
nodes; Trust, Security, Governance and Regulation

peer reviewed journals and papers for presentation at conferences and
workshops under the direction of the Principal Investigator or
Grant-holder.

• To assist with the development of research objectives and proposals.

• To work with the Principal Investigator or Grant-holder and other
colleagues in the research group, as appropriate, to identify areas for
research, develop new research methods and extend the research
portfolio.

• To deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research
objectives and deadlines by discussing with the Principal Investigator
or Grant-holder and offering creative or innovative solutions.

• To liaise with research colleagues and make internal and external
contacts to develop knowledge and understanding to form relationships
for future research collaboration.

• To plan and manage own research activity, research resources in
collaboration with others and contribute to the planning of research
projects.

• To deliver training in research techniques/approaches to peers,
visitors and students as appropriate.

• To contribute to fostering a collegial and respectful working
environment which is inclusive and welcoming and where everyone is
treated fairly with dignity and respect.

• To engage in wider citizenship to support the department and wider
discipline.

This post is fixed term for 30 months; the project is time limited and
will end on 30/04/2024.

The post-holder is employed to work on a research project which will be
led by another colleague. Whilst this means that the post-holder will
not be carrying out independent research in his/her own right, the

23) PhD student to research trustworthy HRI and Socially Assistive
Robotics at the Uppsala Social Robotics Lab

We have a funded position available for a new PhD student to help us
kick off new lines of research around trustworthy Human Robot
Interaction (HRI) and Socially Assistive Robotics at the Uppsala Social
Robotics Lab: https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fusr-lab.github.io%2F&data=04%7C01%7Ciccm-l%40lists.psu.edu%7Cc719786e960846fed81808da05e68d24%7C7cf48d453ddb4389a9c1c115526eb52e%7C0%7C0%7C637828785010298309%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=m2Qjgr4Z6kTVP3tP0x869MNeJiSAZxfqbrxnTKGMMH8%3D&reserved=0

The overall aim of the PhD project is to increase diversity in who is
developing social robots: think participatory design, and
human-in-the-loop development/automation methods) and/or what those
social robots 'look like' (think mindful and norm-breaking use of
anthropomorphic social identity traits, or lack thereof e.g. with
regards to gender) and to explore how this can create /better /HRI.

As such, there is lots of scope to shape the project depending on the
candidate's interest (e.g. more towards human-in-the-loop ML approaches
or more towards HRI design and evaluation) but we are ideally looking
for someone with good programming skills - a computer science background
or e.g. Human Computer Interaction or Interaction Design who would be
confident programming robots. The work will be very interdisciplinary so
interests in e.g. the social sciences, AI ethics, STS and psychology
would be appreciated.  Find the official advert here:
