A new version of the ACT-R software is now available on the
prerelease page of the ACT-R web site:

<http://act-r.psy.cmu.edu/next/>

It will be moved to the current version in mid-August.

The most notable change from the previous version is the updates
to the included tutorial materials.  The units have been edited
to remove some of the redundant examples, some models have been
updated to change confusing slot names in the productions, and
additional tasks have been added to the tutor mode used in the
Stepper tool with unit 1.

Those and other changes will be discussed in my talk during the
ACT-R Workshop next week, and the slides of that talk will be
available on the ACT-R web site after the workshop.

If you have any questions or problems with this update let me know.

Saturday, 12 Nov, to Tuesday, 15 Nov 22. Workshops will
occur on Saturday and the regular program will begin on Sunday. Current
plans are for the event to be held virtually.

The conference brings together a diverse set of researchers who pursue
the original goals of AI. That is, the overarching
theme of the conference is to explain cognition in computational terms
and to reproduce a broad range of intelligent behaviors and human
abilities in computational artifacts.

RofASSS is a novel publishing venture (free and
online) designed to promote academic discussion on all aspects of social
simulation. Contributions are not peer reviewed (being rejected only for
irrelevance, incoherence, plagiarism or libel) but are permanently
citable and available for subsequent commentary. This allows much more
rapid publication (and debate) and so is complementary to existing
journals. At the same time, the aim of RofASSS is to provide an outlet
for contributions useful to the quality of social simulation that
(unlike articles and book reviews) will not easily find a home
elsewhere. These include blue sky research ideas, reassessments of
historical contributions, technical ideas supporting progressive
research, evaluative summaries of events that may set an agenda for new
research and so on.

RofASSS has now published more than 50 contributions (with over 100
citations) since Jun 2018, has more than 1000 subscribers (and receives
800 views per month) but we would welcome more writers, more readers and
more thoughtful comments on existing contributions. If you have had an
interesting idea that won?t leave you alone, that has academic value but
is not suitable for a journal article, consider whether RofASSS may be
the right venue for it.

**International Journal of Human-Computer Studies **

This special issue is focused on the development, evaluation, and
discussion of computational cognitive models of human-automated vehicle
interaction. The capabilities of automated vehicles are rapidly
increasing and change human interaction with the vehicle. Yet, at the
same time, fully automated vehicles that do not require human
interaction are not available. Therefore, systems are needed in which
the human and the vehicle interact together. Computational cognitive
models that can describe, predict, and/or anticipate human behavior and
thought can play a crucial role in this regard. Such models can for
example inform designers about potential human states and the
consequences of interface design for safety, aid the vehicle in
anticipating human actions (e.g., anticipating levels of attention or
trust), and aid research in better understanding how theories of human
behavior and thought apply (or do not fit with) observations in applied
field. Cognitive models are developed in many fields including cognitive
science, HCI, and AI. We
hope that our special issue will collect submissions from researchers
from these and many other fields. To constrain the type of models, our
special issue focuses on models of human behavior and thought. This
contrasts with other model approaches such as deep learning models that
are used to train a car, and that do not consider (extensively) the role

Articles must be based on original research, although extended versions
of published conference papers may be acceptable if they contain at
least 50% new material. IJHCS likes to publish concrete research
contributions with a user-centric and/or engineering element. All
submissions should have an explicit connection to both human-automated
vehicle interaction AND computational cognitive modeling. For
human-automated vehicle interaction, various levels of automation can be
considered (e.g., SAE Levels 1-5). For computational cognitive modeling,
the model should be a model that captures aspects of human behavior or
thought. Articles can have a focus on empirical, design, or theoretical
aspects.

Within the field of human-automated vehicle interaction various topics
might be of interest, as long as they connect to human-automated vehicle
interaction AND computational cognitive modeling. For example, they
could address one of these challenges:

? * What phenomena and driving scenarios need to be captured? Such
??? papers would connect computational cognitive models and empirical
??? study results for relevant phenomena, such as: transitions of
??? control, dynamic attention, mental models, mode confusion, training

? * What technical capabilities and limitations do computational
??? cognitive models possess that are relevant to the field of
??? human-automated vehicle interaction? For example, compatibility,
??? adaptation, speed of development, and broader adoption.
? * How can computational cognitive models of human-automated vehicle
??? interaction benefit from developments in the field of AI, while also 
avoiding pitfalls? For example, around topics such as explainability, 
scalability and generalization, and

A new post-doctoral fellow will support the projects on human-machine 
teaming. All our projects require applicants that are familiar with 
experimental studies and with cognitive computational models. A

will also engage in the development of computational models of

A final reminder that the 2022 ACT-R Workshop takes place this Wednesday
July 27. The final schedule is attached. Please note that the
workshop starts at 10am ET rather than 9am as indicated in the conference
program. Online attendees should connect to Zoom a few minutes in advance
to be admitted to the meeting.
