This issue leads with the MathPsych/ICCM  2022 paper call, with a 1 May
submission
deadline for this summer’s meetings (there will be an online and a
virtual conference).

The bonus is a free course on climate change. The instructor, Michael
Mann, is moving
from Penn State’s main campus to another campus in Philadelphia. You
might consider
taking this course if you were moved by Wynn Bruce's recent action.

The joint gathering of the 55th Annual Meeting of the Society for
Mathematical Psychology and the 20th International Conference on
Cognitive Modeling is the premier conference for research on
mathematical and computational models and computation-based theories of
human cognition.  Following our success in previous years, ICCM has
again joined forces with the Society for Mathematical Psychology to
create a conference in which all sessions are open to all attendees, and
cross-talk is highly encouraged.

MathPsych/ICCM 2022 is a forum for presenting and discussing the
complete spectrum of cognitive modeling approaches, including
connectionism, symbolic modeling, dynamical systems, Bayesian modeling,
and cognitive architectures. Research topics can range from low-level
perception to high-level reasoning. We also welcome contributions that
use computational models to better understand neuroscientific data.

*Two separate events*

The online conference format of the previous years was popular, but many
attendees also expressed a strong desire for an in-person meeting in the
summer of 2022.  To accommodate as many members as possible, we are
planning for the 2022 edition of the annual joint meeting of the Society
for Mathematical Psychology and the International Conference on
Cognitive Modeling will be *split into two completely separate events*:
a virtual conference followed by an in-person conference.

*Virtual MathPsych/ICCM 2022*will follow the model of the successful
2020 and 2021 meetings, with pre-recorded talks, posters, and a
discussion forum on our virtual meeting platform mathpsych.org
https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fmathpsych.org%2F&data=05%7C01%7Ciccm-l%40lists.psu.edu%7Cc162358f8d4b4524b67d08da26d7041c%7C7cf48d453ddb4389a9c1c115526eb52e%7C0%7C0%7C637865004312992886%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=Am7p3InBLq3%2FTVLw8HdoQ0k8tY46PTH2Namhx3rUNpE%3D&reserved=0, from *11-15 Jul 2022*. *In-person MathPsych/ICCM 2022 (Venue Details Still Pending)*will be
a fully in-person conference, and will follow the model of our
pre-pandemic meetings, with live talks, poster sessions, and social
events.  We are tentatively planning for the in-person conference to be
in Toronto Canada, 23-27 Jul, 2022.  For more information,
including submission instructions, deadlines, and registration, please

registrations, submissions, and deadlines. All members are invited to
attend both events (note: the same abstract can be submitted to and
presented in both events).

2)  42nd Soar Workshop, held 25 May 22

The U of Michigan Soar Group and Soar Technology, Inc. are pleased to
announce the 42nd Soar Workshop will be held on May 24-25, 2022. This
year attendees can choose to participate in the workshop either
in-person or through a Zoom webinar. There is no charge to attend the
42nd Soar Workshop although registration is required. Click here to
register.

All workshop information will be available on this web page. Periodic
updates may be announced to the soar-cognitive-architecture mailing
list, but please check this web page for the most up-to-date information.

Overview

Each year, members of the Soar community – faculty, scientists, graduate
students, technical staff and developers – gather together for several
days of intensive interaction and exchange on Soar. The Soar community
is widely distributed geographically, so these workshops provide an
opportunity to have face-to-face conversations, learn about the current
status of other participants’ research and get previews of what will
happen in the future.  We will try to give as many members of the
community as possible the opportunity to describe their research or
discuss the Soar issues that are of concern to them. This means the time
available per talk is quite short (typically either 5 or 15 minutes).
Since workshop attendees are already entrenched in the Soar world, brief
talks that concentrate on only the essentials work very well.

While the Soar Workshop is announced on the soar-cognitive-architecture
mailing list, we want to ensure that everyone actively working with Soar
is invited. If you know of anyone who should have been invited but did
not receive an announcement, please let us know. Proceedings from the
previous Soar workshops are available online at this page.

Details

There is no charge to attend the 42nd Soar Workshop although
registration is required. Click here to register.

The workshop will be held in room 1014 of the Herbert H. Dow building on
north campus. Each day of the workshop will begin at 9 am and end at
5pm. Consistent with University of Michigan policy, in-person attendees
are expected to wear masks.

The Zoom webinar can be reached via the following link:

https://umich.zoom.us/j/94538568575

Meeting ID: 945 3856 8575
Passcode: 435933

The workshop format is presentations only – no formal papers. Please
email a copy of your presentation(s) by 25 May 22 to this address, as we
will be posting all presentations on the Soar website.

The workshop will also include two social events in the evening that all
attendees are welcome to join. On 24 May, a group dinner will be hosted
by Soar Technology at a restaurant TBD, and, on 25 May, John Laird will
host a gathering at his house.

Contact Information

Questions and information regarding the workshop should be directed via
email to John Laird.

Implementation

A team appointed from members of the Diversity Committee will review
each application received, communicate with each applicant, determine
which proposals to accept and reject, and work with the conference
organizers to determine a scheduled time for each affinity group on the
conference program. There may be cases where multiple proposals come in
by different groups that might be best off knowing about each other and
potentially merging. In those cases, the team will seek consent from
each group to put them in touch with the other(s) and put all consenting
groups in touch with each other.

HFES Seed Grants Targeting the Intersections of HF/E and
Anti‐Racism/Anti‐Bias: Request for Proposals

The Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) continues its seed grant
program in support of research and programming that investigates and
addresses the intersections of Human Factors/Ergonomics and
Anti-Racism/Anti-Bias. This grant program will stimulate and support
projects and research intended to improve our understanding of and
reduce/eliminate racism and bias in the systems, environments, products
and tools with which humans interact. Seed grants fund the early stages
of projects with the potential for broad impact or provide preliminary
data for future state, federal, foundation or other grant proposal
mechanisms. The long-term goal of this grant program is to identify
evidence‐based solutions to the problems of racism and bias.

Mark Your Calendars: Upcoming Webinar

When: Thursday, 27 Apr 22 12:30 pm Eastern Time
Speakers: Dr. Judi See, Holly A.H. Handley
Moderator:Camille Peres, Julie Gilpin-McMinn

In the second installment of the “So What” Webinar Series, we will be
talking with folks about the new(ish) Human Readiness Level
Scale (HRL) standard (ANSI/HFES 400-2021).

Standards are a fundamental way of communicating science to practice so
what better topic for the “So What” Webinar!! In this
webinar—practitioners will have a chance to gain insights from those who
developed the standard as well as ask questions regarding its
implementation and use. Academics can learn more about HRL so they can
teach it to future practitioners.

The standard is available free of charge. Attendees may benefit from
reviewing the special Oct 2021 issue of Ergonomics in Design on the
standard as well.

Request for Volunteers – Citation of Standards and Best Practices in
HFES Publications

Many times over the years, HFES members have told the Executive Council,
both directly and in surveys, that connecting the research in HFES
publications with practice is a struggle. There are many ways this
translation, a strategic goal, could be accomplished. One of them is
require that HFES publications cite relevant standards, best practices,
etc. This citation requirement only make sense if relevant standards and
best practices can be found. Therefore: Given the educational resources
to be provided, can candidate authors of HFES publications (and
reviewers of them) find standards/best practices, etc. relevant to an
article they are writing (or could write or review)?

We are seeking volunteers from the Society to examine the educational
resources that are available to help people find standards. We provide
resources to get volunteers started including a report, “Getting
Research Into Practice via Standards”. Other resources may be examined
as well. Volunteers should select two articles from an HFES Publication
(e.g., the Journal, the Proceedings and find the standards / best
practices / etc. that are relevant to each of the two articles you
examined. A sample reporting template is provided.

Please consider this request to volunteer with HFES. We appreciate all
of the help our members can provide.

Human Centered AI by Ben Shneiderman. Oxford U Press, 2022
Review by Christopher Wickens, 18 Feb 2022

HCAI is a book that, not surprisingly given the title, strongly adopts a
perspective that is quite compatible with the beliefs and values of the
human factors community. In his well-written, enjoyable and easy-to-read
book he echoes many points that have been made by this community for 40
years, with its origins in aviation psychology, beginning with the
pioneering work of Earl Wiener, Charlie Billings, Raja Parasuraman,
Nadine Sarter, John Lee and others. His writing nicely complements this
approach grounded in engineering psychology, with that from the computer
science perspective.

Shneiderman is a highly credentialed computer scientist, who has gained
a great deal of respect within the computer science community, initially
with his excellent work on data visualization. Throughout the book, he
laments that much of the CS community pays little regard for the human
user; and his principled devotion imparted in this book is to turn their
attention toward greater heed to human centered issues in artificial
intelligence. He is an optimist that this will happen.
