Announcing virtual MathPsych/ICCM 2021 and Call for Symposia

We invite you to virtual MathPsych/ICCM 2021, the joint gathering of the
54th Annual Meeting of the Society for Mathematical Psychology and the
19th International Conference on Cognitive Modelling (ICCM): the premier
conference for research on computational models and computation-based
theories of human cognition. Following our success in previous years,
ICCM has again joined forces with the Society for Mathematical
Psychology to create a conference in which all sessions are open to all
attendees, and cross-talk is highly encouraged.

Virtual MathPsych/ICCM 2021 is a forum for presenting and discussing the
complete spectrum of cognitive modeling approaches, including
connectionism, symbolic modeling, dynamical systems, Bayesian modeling,
and cognitive architectures. Research topics can range from low-level
perception to high-level reasoning. We also welcome contributions that
use computational models to better understand neuroscientific data.

Format and venue

Following the model of the successful 2020 virtual meeting, the
conference will be fully online, with no in-person component, and all
submitted presentations to be provided as recordings.

The conference will once again take place on the Society for
Mathematical Psychology’s online venue, mathpsych.org. Access will be
provided upon registration.

The interactive component of the virtual conference will run from July
1, 2021 to July 12, 2021 and will involve live Q&A sessions, live
plenary talks, social events, and more. Pre-recorded talks and posters
and a discussion forum will be available throughout the conference period.

Call for symposia

Symposia are blocks of four to eight regular-length presentations on a
relatively narrow topic. “Regular length” means that there are 20
minutes total per presentation (this includes time for questions and
answers). To propose a symposium, send an email to
conferencecommittee at mathpsych.org with subject line “Symposium:”
followed by a short title. In the body of the email, please provide a
symposium title; a 200-250 word abstract; and a proposed list of
speakers. Please also indicate which speakers (if any) have already
agreed to contribute.

The deadline for symposium proposals is April 1, 2021. The conference
committee will review proposals within one week. The strongest proposals
involve a topic that is of interest to many conference attendees, while
also attracting new people who don’t normally attend the conference.
Ideally, many of the proposed speakers have already agreed to contribute.

Submission categories

There are four submission categories. In all cases, submitters should
send in an abstract for review. Once the abstract is accepted,
submitters will be invited to submit a recorded presentation. These
recorded presentations will be made available for viewing some time
before the interactive component of the conference starts.

Over the last forty years, there has been continual research in
cognitive architecture – the computational substructure underlying
cognition. VISCA is an attempt to bring together leaders in the field to
share their current research across the breadth of cognitive
architecture, including research on modeling human behavior,
neural-cognitive architectures, functional capabilities of cognitive
architectures, components of cognitive architectures, and applications.
Our goal is to enable anyone in the world to participate. Please share
this webpage with colleagues and friends who might be interested.

There are no registration fees or other costs. All that we ask is that
you register so we can provide you access to the symposium and the
materials we collect. The symposium will be a live event, June 8-11,
with the exact times varying each day, but always between 10am-1:30pm
EDST. Each day will consist of a series of 30 min talks followed by a 30
min moderated discussion session. Videos of the presentations will be
available after the symposium.

We will use Zoom Webinar for the presentations. An email will be sent to
all registrants with details of how to participate. Email
laird at umich.edu if you have questions.

For those interested in the Soar cognitive architecture, the Soar
Workshop will be held June 14.

There is a program on the web site, and there is something for everyone.

International Conference on Social Computing, Behavioral-Cultural
Modeling, & Prediction and Behavior Representation in Modeling and
Simulation (SPB-BRIMS)

SBP-BRiMS is an interdisciplinary computational social science
conference focused on both modeling complex socio-technical systems and
using computational techniques to reason about and study complex
socio-technical systems.  The participants in this conference take part
in forming the conversation on how computation is shaping the modern
world and helping us to better understand and reason about human
behavior. Both papers addressing basic research and those addressing
applied research are accepted.   All methodological approaches are
encouraged; however, the vast majority of papers use computer
simulation, network analysis, or machine learning as the method of choice
in addressing human social and behavioral activities.  At the
conference, these paper presentations are complemented by data science
challenge problems, demonstrations of new technologies, and a government
funding panel.

All papers are qualified for the Best Paper Award. Papers with student
first authors will be considered for the Best Student Paper Award. Those
receiving these awards will be invited to publish an extended version in
a special issue of the journal/Computational and Mathematical

       Special Track on Human-Agent Teaming

This year we are soliciting papers for a special workshop on human-agent
teaming (or human-AI teaming) to be held during the conference. When
submitting your paper in EasyChair please indicate whether you want to be
considered for this track.

Special Track on COVID-19 & Validation

This year we are soliciting papers for a special workshop on the
COVID-19 pandemic to be held during the conference. We are particularly
interested in papers focused on validation studies of models and tools
used for COVID-19 response efforts. Validation studies evaluate the
influence of important threats to validity, such as missing data,
measurement error, and confounding. Validation studies are particularly
important for assessing the utility of models and tools outside of
similar settings (e.g., application of models and tools to the next
pandemic or global disaster). When submitting your paper in EasyChair
please indicate whether you want to be considered for this track.

       CHALLENGE PROBLEM

The conference expects to announce a computational challenge as in
previous years. Additional details will be posted in December. Follow us

*Important Dates*

Paper Submission Deadline: 10 May 21

Notification of Acceptance/Rejection: 25 May 21

Workshop Date: 21 Aug 21

*Scope*

The field of AI stands at an inflection point, and
there could be many different directions in which the future of AI
research could unfold. Accordingly, there is a growing interest to
ensure that current and future AI research is used in a responsible
manner for the benefit of humanity (i.e., for social good). To achieve
this goal, a wide range of perspectives and contributions are needed,
spanning the full spectrum from fundamental research to sustained
deployments in the real-world.

This workshop will explore how AI research can contribute to solving
challenging problems faced by current-day societies. For example, what
role can AI research play in promoting health, sustainable development
and infrastructure security? How can AI initiatives be used to achieve
consensus among a set of negotiating self-interested entities (e.g.,
finding resolutions to trade talks between countries)? To address such
questions, this workshop will bring together researchers and
practitioners across different strands of AI research and a wide range
of important real-world application domains. The objective is to share
the current state of research and practice, explore directions for
future work, and create opportunities for collaboration. In addition,
the workshop will place a special emphasis on highlighting AI approaches
for tackling the COVID-19 pandemic. The organizers believe that AI
research has an important role to play in providing unique insights
about the pandemic and developing targeted responses; we encourage
submissions from both AI researchers as well as epidemiologists, health
policy researchers, and other domain experts who are interested in
engaging with the IJCAI community.

*Topics of Interest*

We are interested in a broad range of research topics, both foundational
and applied. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

   * Applications of Learning and Optimization in Societally Beneficial
     Domains
   * AI Approaches for COVID-19

6)  Special issue: Interaction Science aspects of Cognitive Computing
and Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS)

      https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fjois.online%2F&data=04%7C01%7Ciccm-l%40lists.psu.edu%7Cc0549a143b634d2eb43f08d90a74874b%7C7cf48d453ddb4389a9c1c115526eb52e%7C0%7C0%7C637552317881147454%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=mgxqm8ZcmGqwfvrt%2ByhTPC5Heh%2B8lVOgovG191armow%3D&reserved=0

Call for Papers for special issue

Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) are characterized by the strong
interactions among cyber components and dynamic actors including
physical components. CPS are expected to play a major role in the
development of next-generation interactive systems. Due to the deeply
complex intertwining of heterogeneous components and various
stakeholders, CPS development and operation pose fundamental challenges
in multiple aspects, such as design-integrated engineering, retrofitting
existing production settings, real-time connectivity, system federation,
interoperability, data-driven intelligence, distributed cognitive
computing, sensing and decision making.

Cognitive computing allows addressing these challenges in various
domains, such as smart energy management or user-centered healthcare. In
particular, it enables capturing needs to address complexity,
explainable systems, and human intervention in light of distributed
control and real-time interaction between dynamic environments and
physical systems. In this context, studying the intelligence-based
emergence and communication-centric development of complex systems from
a CPS perspective is extremely important.

The special issue aims to consolidate academic research and practical
development on Interaction Science aspects of Cognitive Computing and
Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS). It should provide trans- and
interdisciplinary findings of the most recent innovations, trends and
practical challenges encountered as well as solutions. The objective of
this issue is to cover advances in all aspects of CPS as socio-technical
systems and interactive intelligence including theory, tools,
applications, systems, test-beds and field deployments.

The contributions should address fundamental principles that emphasize
on the intelligible intelligent integration of cyber and physical
elements, and infrastructures for building smart interactive CPS,
highlighting the design, implementation, evaluation and investigation of
cyber-physical applications. Thereby, Cognitive Computing as a
sensing-driven-computing scheme explores and integrates intelligence
from all types of actors and components in various scenarios and
solution contexts.

The works may focus on the following topics:

   · Self-organizing complex systems, e.g., IoT-based supply networks

   · Human-in-the-loop shared or supervisory control

   · Workforce participation for cognitive computing developments

   · Interactive and humanoid web technologies for IoT real-time
development

   · Robustness, safety, privacy and security of CPS driven by cognitive
computing approaches

   · Retrofitting for implementing Industry 4.0 concepts

   · Big Data system and data analytics interfaces for intelligent CPS

   · Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality interactions

   · Digital Twins as carriers of cognitive model-based CPS design

   · Cognitive Edge Computing including sensor systems and intelligent
robots

   · Collaborative sensing and collective intelligence

   · Internet of Cognitive Things

   · Explainable Deep Learning for CPS in operation

   · Architectural frameworks for Cognitive CPS

   · Design-integrating engineering of Cognitive CPS

   · Cognitive CPS in smart homes, buildings, communities and regions

   · Cognitive stakeholder-centered mobility, logistics, and
transportation systems

   · Cognitive Computing in large scale CPS

   · Advanced schemes of maximizing asset utilizations and efficiency
enhancement

What is Neuromatch Academy?

Neuromatch Academy (NMA) launched last year as a response to the
COVID-19 pandemic. Our aim is to provide globally-accessible,
high-quality, TA-supported training in computational techniques related
to neuroscience. In 2020, NMA designed and ran a fully online 3-week
Computational Neuroscience course for 1757 students with 191 teaching
assistants (TAs) working in virtual inverted (or flipped) classrooms and
on small group projects. Fourteen languages, active community
management, and low cost allowed for an unprecedented level of
inclusivity and universal accessibility.

What’s in a course?

Our courses are intensive 3-week programs involving hands-on tutorials
developed by experts in the field. We have two tracks for students:
interactive and observer.  Accepted interactive students are placed into
TA-led pods (groups) using the neuromatch algorithm, which matches
students with common interests who are in the same time zone and their
preferred language for instruction. Interactive students receive
personalized support as they work through hands-on tutorials and
collaborate on course projects.  Officially registered observer track
students have full access to the materials, access to NMA course
communications (e.g., Discord), and can choose to be matched with other
observer track students

What does it cost?

We charge full-time students/academics a region adjusted small fee for
the Interactive track in order to pay for TAs (fee waivers are available
to those who need it, no questions asked). Students without an academic
affiliation (i.e., industry applicants) are charged the full
unsubsidized cost of the school, but can also inquire about waivers.
Observer track participants have access to all the content at no cost,
but are not placed in TA-led pods.

Dear Common Model community, (there is a mailing list for this
community, common-model at lists.andrew.cmu.edu)

As some of you know, John, Christian, Paul, and I have been working for
the past 2-3 years on testing whether the CMC could be used as *brain*
architecture as well as a cognitive one.

In addition to better understanding the CMC itself, we were hoping to
reach out to the neuroscience community, showcasing both how the CMC
could be used in neuroimaging and how well the CMC performs, compared to
other architectures.

I am happy to report that the first successful paper is now out in
NeuroImage, the flagship journal of the neuroimaging community! Here is
the link: https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdoi.org%2F10.1016%2Fj.neuroimage.2021.118035&data=04%7C01%7Ciccm-l%40lists.psu.edu%7Cc0549a143b634d2eb43f08d90a74874b%7C7cf48d453ddb4389a9c1c115526eb52e%7C0%7C0%7C637552317881157447%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=HIMRvdyLvu7tq9hmkHBVS5TCJ2m1hnX6G8qjTjZn6%2BU%3D&reserved=0

The short answer is that CMC is incredibly effective at modeling brain
activity at a large scale. The paper compares the CMC against six other
possible architectures that link and connect the same components and
against six variations of the same architectures that also include the
Perception/Action connection. All architectures are compared across 200
participants and seven different cognition tasks. The CMC always fits
the data best.

In addition to John, Christian, Paul, and myself, the paper is
co-authored by our postdoc Catherine Sibert and our students Zoe
Steine-Hanson and Natalie Koh. It was truly a team effort -- and an
exciting adventure for all of us!

Within the context of the High-Tech Agenda Bavaria, the Faculty of
Humanities,
Social Sciences, and Theology at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität
Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU)
invites applications for 6 Open Topic Full Professorships (W3) for
Digital Humanities
and Digital Social Studies at the newly established
Dept of Digital Humanities and Social Studies. The professorships are
full-time
and permanent positions to be filled by the earliest possible starting
date. We seek to
appoint leading experts with an internationally visible research and
teaching profile who
have a creative mindset and expertise in the following areas of digital
humanities and
social studies:

• Research-oriented data and knowledge management
• Computing images and objects in cultural heritage
• Computing text and language
• Analysing geo-social data
• Human computer interaction
• Governing data economies

The newly appointed professors will teach and conduct research into the
development of innovative digital methods in and for the digital
humanities,
cultural studies and social studies, and the analysis of digital
transformation.
They will focus on developing concepts for dealing with structurally
complex
units of data with no clear semiotic features at all stages of the data
lifecycle;
on enabling computer-assisted analysis of images and objects and reflection
on visual culture (e.g. critical machine vision, blurring); on developing
interpretable AI processes for text analysis such as automated and
semi automated processes for hermeneutic text interpretation and on
connecting neural models to formal means of knowledge representation;
on using new data sources such as big social and geosocial data, social
media
data or real-time data to analyse processes and structures in society,
and on investigating the transformation of relationships in society as a
result
of these new readability trends; on the socially responsible design of user
interfaces and interfaces during the system development process in
consideration of the fact that usability of systems has a decisive
influence
on whether and how successfully people participate in partial systems in
society
and in recognition of the fact that systems influence people’s
behaviour; on
critical analysis of political regulation and design of data economies and
datafied societies. The professorships will be based in a newly
established department.

The department focuses on the opportunities and challenges of datafication
and algorithmisation of social and cultural phenomena (objects and
immaterial concepts)
as demonstrated by methods for analysing and processing data and data-based
artefacts and in the assessment of the consequences in the real world of
‘culture and society’
and in academia in the sense of an ‘epistemological transformation’. It
links expertise in  algorithms and other technical aspects with
epistemological, historical, socio-critical
and normative-ethical expertise in the field of the humanities, social
sciences and
cultural studies. FAU seeks to appoint outstanding, internationally
visible researchers  (publications, networks) who strive to maintain
close links with the established disciplines
in the fields of the humanities, cultural sciences and social sciences
but who
also take an interdisciplinary approach, continuing and expanding the
already close  collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering (Department
of Computer Science)
and the HTA Department of Data Science located in the Faculty of
Sciences. Candidates
are expected to have successfully raised third-party funding, preferably
within
the context of collaborative interdisciplinary projects. The
Department’s strength in
research should be reflected in the continued development of the degree
programmes  taught partly in English (Bachelor/Master of Arts in Digital
Humanities) and in
explicitly research-oriented teaching as well as in changes to doctoral
degrees. The
innovative potential of the department extends to the establishment of
open structures
of governance involving all status groups in the Department Board, the
dynamic distribution
of teaching capacities, a pool of specialised administrative capacities
and a needs-oriented
approach to allocating resources, moving away from the traditional
structure of a Chair.

The successful candidates will be expected to participate in shaping the
Department’s
profile as well as being involved in shaping and developing the new
transfer and
support-oriented Competence Unit Research Data/Information (CU-ReDI).
The professors should seize the excellent opportunities offered by our
close interdisciplinary links to
launch highly competitive collaborative projects.

Successful candidates show an excellent academic track record in
research and teaching
at the highest international standards. You have substantial research
experience
abroad and/or international cooperations as well as experience in
managing research
projects and in raising third-party funding. A university degree and an
outstanding doctoral
degree as well as a passion for education and pertinent teaching
experience are
prerequisites. Candidates who are able and willing to teach in both
English and
German are desired. The position also requires additional postdoctoral
qualifications.

These should be in the form of a habilitation (postdoctoral thesis) or
equivalent
academic qualifications. You may also have acquired these necessary
qualifications
in a non-university context or through a junior faculty position (for
example as W1 Prof or Asst Prof).

FAU expects applicants to demonstrate academic leadership, engage in
early career
development and to drive FAU’s strategic agenda. FAU pursues a policy of
intense student mentoring and therefore expects its teaching staff to be
present
during lecture periods. FAU offers an outstandingly productive research
environment as well as a passionate and multi-disciplinary scholarly
community
within a vibrant institutional network.

In its pursuit of academic excellence, FAU is committed to equality of
opportunity
and to a proactive and inclusive approach, which supports and encourages
all under-represented groups, promotes an inclusive culture and values
diversity.
FAU is a family-friendly employer and is also responsive to the needs of
dual career couples.

Please submit your complete application documents (CV, list of
publications,
list of lectures and courses taught, copies of certificates and degrees,
list of third-party funding)

Sadly, not a new bonus, but a good one.  I still watch this when I can.
Dr. John Campbell is a retired nursing professor in the UK. Ernest,
honest, well read, modest.  Great stuff.  Wizard, or pukka, as he would
either say or understand.  He would say and I would agree that we have
to care about other countries because we are connected to them now
through chains of transmission.
