MacArthur Professor of Data Science @ Bucknell University Message-ID: All, Bucknell University is hiring for a new interdisciplinary faculty position, see below for more information: Bucknell University is a private undergraduate-focused institution comprised of highly-ranked colleges in arts and sciences, engineering, and management. We invite applications for a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Professor of Data Science. We seek a dedicated teacher-scholar with a PhD degree in Analytics, Computer Science, Data Science, Information Systems, Statistics, or a closely related field, and welcome applicants with a broad background. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the field, the position is being jointly supported by the Departments of Analytics & Operations Management, Computer Science, and Mathematics. The subsequent affiliation of a successful applicant will be determined in consultation with the candidate, and a shared appointment between two departments is a possibility. The successful applicant is expected to have an interdisciplinary focus and to work closely with departments from across the University. It is expected that the degree will be completed by the start of the appointment in August 2020. We expect to hire at the Assistant Professor level, but outstanding candidates will be considered at the Associate Professor or Professor level. We will be accepting external applicants only. The successful candidate will contribute to interdisciplinary offerings in data science; these will include courses at the introductory, intermediate, and advanced levels. Such courses might include data management, data visualization, machine learning, data storytelling, or topics courses in data science; many of these courses will address, to varying degrees, the intersection of data analytics and ethics. The successful candidate will also develop a strong body of scholarship in their field of specialization within data science. There is an active community of faculty and staff on campus who have been discussing the role of data science at Bucknell, and the successful candidate would be expected to join and contribute to this community. Applicants should submit a cover letter, a CV, graduate transcripts (unofficial copies accepted), a statement of teaching philosophy, and a research statement that includes opportunities for undergraduate research. Applicants are asked to summarize in their cover letter any past experiences and leadership in diversity, equity, and inclusion, or their potential to make contributions in this area. Applicants should arrange to have three letters of recommendation submitted separately. For additional information and to apply, please go to Bucknell?s career site ( careers.bucknell.edu). Review of applications will begin no later than October 15, 2019 and continue until the position is filled. Questions about the application process should be addressed to one of the following: Matt Bailey, Professor of Analytics and Operations (matt.bailey at bucknell.edu ) Peter Brooksbank, Professor of Mathematics (peter.brooksbank at bucknell.edu) Brian King, Associate Professor of Computer Science (brian.king at bucknell.edu ) See the job ad here - https://jobs.bucknell.edu/en-us/job/496449/john-d-and-catherine-t-macarthur-professor-of-data-science -- Christopher L. I realize the deadline is approaching, but please do let me know if you think that you might have something to contribute and I can see about whether an extension would be possible. Best, Lael Call for Papers ?Group Decision Making A Special Issue/Article Collection in Cognitive Research: Principles and Implications (CR:PI) Manuscript Deadline: October 1, 2019 www.psychonomic.org/page/crpigroupdecision Co-editors: Christian C. Luhmann and Lael J. Schooler Real-world decisions are often made in a social context. Physicians and financial advisors make decisions in consultation with their clients. Spouses collaborate to make an array of household decisions. In general work settings, decisions are almost always being made by a team, committee, or group. Decisions made by groups can be influenced by diverse perspectives, information, and expertise. Past work has demonstrated that such diversity can improve the quality of the resulting decisions (e.g., the wisdom of crowds). However, research has also demonstrated that interaction (e.g., discussion among the group members) can hurt the quality of group decisions (e.g., group polarization). When and why groups produce these contrasting outcomes is the subject of ongoing research. This special issue seeks articles addressing group decision-making, including questions such as: What factors influence the quality of group decisions? How are the capabilities of groups and their constituent members related? How do group members' individual differences influence the quality, speed, confidence, and other characteristics of group decisions? How and when is knowledge and information distributed among group members combined when groups make decisions? Can the performance of a given group be predicted ahead of time? We invite you to contribute. Please email the guest editors with any questions about submissions. CR:PI is the open access journal of the Psychonomic Society. Its mission is to publish use-inspired basic research: fundamental cognitive research that grows from hypotheses about real-world problems. As with all Psychonomic Society journals, submissions to CRPI are subject to rigorous peer review. For manuscripts accepted for the special issue, the publication fee may be fully or partially waived depending on the number of manuscripts accepted for the special issue. The authors should indicate when they submit a manuscript if they are requesting a waiver of the publication fee and why.
