**With apologies and respect to our valued colleagues of other nationalities, only U.S. citizens and permanent legal residents of the United States are eligible for these positions.**
The U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory's Cognitive Models and Agents Branch has a variety of contract positions available for talented cognitive, computational, and computer scientists interested in working on basic and applied cognitive science research. Our research portfolio combines empirical human subjects studies and formal, rigorous modeling and simulation methods to replicate, understand, and predict human performance and learning, and to create new cognitive science-based methods, tool, and technologies.
The following positions are available immediately. Salaries are commensurate with experience. These full-time positions require that candidates have or be eligible to obtain a U.S. DoD Secret Security Clearance:
-Research assistant for predictive performance equation research. This is mathematical modeling for personalized, adaptive timing of education and training events. The successful candidate will have a bachelor's degree or above and prior research experience (data collection, data analyses, summarizing, presenting, and publishing results) in cognitive science, cognitive or experimental psychology, or a closely related discipline.
-3 software engineer positions:
--Intelligent search, scheduling, web-services engineer
---Expertise required: MySQL, PHP
--Heuristics for machine-aided diagnostics and decisions engineer
---Expertise desired: statistical methods and machine-learning experience
--Robust autonomous sensing engineer
---Expertise desired: Java-based agent development
These positions all require design and development experience across a broad range of system and software technologies. Successful candidates will be competent with C/C++, Python, and bash shell scripts, experienced working in Linux, and comfortable diving into new languages and technologies as needed. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering related discipline with 7+ years of related work experience, or a Master's degree with 4+ years of related work experience. Primary responsibility is to collaborate with team members on the design, development, and implementation of software infrastructures and innovative new methods for large-scale cognitive modeling, implemented in part using Department of Defense high performance computing resources.
-2 cognitive scientist positions:
--Heuristics for machine-aided diagnostics and decisions
--Robust autonomous sensing
These positions require computational modeling and simulation of human performance in dynamic, uncertain, non-stationary environments. In both cases, successful candidates will have master's or doctoral degrees (or equivalent levels of prior work experience) and evidence of substantive prior contributions in cognitive science, cognitive or experimental psychology, or a closely-related discipline.
Other positions, including summer internships, may be available, pending budgetary approval. Highly qualified candidates should send a statement of interest explaining which position(s) they are applying for along with a CV or resume to cognitive.modeling at us.af.mil
