We address the desideratum of a cognitive complexity theory from a formal and computational side by using methods from artificial intelligence (AI) flanked by imaging techniques like fMRI and behavioral experiments to identify the influence of operations in spatial reasoning and spatial planning. Potential applications of such a theory are human-machine interaction tasks. More precisely, this interdisciplinary project intends to (i) identify factors that influence human spatial reasoning and planning processes from a psychological and neuroscience perspective in contrast to formal approaches in constraint satisfaction, (ii) formally specify these with the help of formal and computational techniques, and (iii) develop a cognitive complexity measure for human spatial planning. More information on the research center can be found at http://www.sfbtr8.spatial-cognition.de/ - Qualifications: - Applicants must have qualifications in the field of fMRI-research. Especially regarding planning and conducting such experimental studies and statistical analysis with SPM and Matlab. Strong interest in cognitive science research and in interdisciplinary collaboration is expected. The position is a 50% position, thus geared towards a doctoral researcher. The successful applicant is expected to work on obtaining a doctoral degree in Cognitive Science or Psychology (only if the first degree has also been obtained in Psychology) in the scope of this position. We offer the opportunity to gain research experience in a modern and enthusiastic research environment with strong interdisciplinary and international links. Responsibilities include project work and research, publication of research results, supervision of student projects, participation in the activities of the SFB/TR 8, and contribution to research proposals. Conditions of Employment: - Salary is according to the German Federal pay scale (TV-L 13, 50% position, approx. EUR 18,000-22,000 p.a. en gross). The position is available from May 15 2012 (or later) and limited until the end of 2014. As the University of Freiburg intends to increase the proportion of female employees in science, women are particularly encouraged to apply. In case of equal personal aptitudes and qualification, disabled persons will be given priority. Applicants with a migration background are very welcome. - How to Apply & What to Do in Case of Questions: - Please address questions about the position and send your application (preferably by email) to: Dr. Marco Ragni SFB/TR 8 Spatial Cognition Universitaet Freiburg Friedrichstr. 50 79098 Freiburg / Germany For a paper-based application, please make sure to only send document copies, as all received application material will be destroyed after the selection process. Once again, we strongly encourage an application via email. His notion of self-efficacy (or more generally his Social Cognitive Theory) is qualitatively predictive of many motivational and learning effects (especially in behavior change and clinical approaches). Yet, I have been unable to find any substantial efforts at translating his theory into computational models. An alternate theory appears to be Power's Perceptual Control Theory, which has been modeled in computational form but not in what we would call a cognitive architecture. I would be grateful for any pointers to papers or researchers. --Pete From andreas.luedtke at offis.de Tue Apr 24 13:48:05 2012 From: andreas.luedtke at offis.de (Andreas Luedtke) Date: Tue, 24 Apr 2012 19:48:05 +0200 Subject: [ACT-R-users] Management & Research Position at OFFIS: Human-Machine Interaction on Ship Bridges Message-ID: ---- Apologies for multiple postings ---- Opening of a Postdoc Position at OFFIS: Human-Machine Interaction on Ship Bridges The OFFIS Research Division Transportation (www.offis.de) has an open position for a post doc researcher on a full-time basis available immediately. The position is for 3 years with an optional extension up to 5 years. You will work in a European Project in the Maritime domain with leading scientists in the field of Human-Machine Interaction and with experts from the Transportation Industry. The position foresees to lead the international team of approx. 15 researchers from different research and industry organisations. The objective of the project is to research a new methodology for human-centred design of adaptive ship bridge systems based on models of distributed decision making processes of seafarers. We will perform a detailed investigation of decision making processes on (simulated and real) ship bridges in order to derive conceptual enhancements of an existing model architecture. The concept will be implemented into executable program code in order to perform model-based simulations of various maritime scenarios. The resulting model will be applied for assessment of human machine interaction (incl. workload and usability aspects) involving a new adaptive navigation system. Apart from leading the work you should contribute to the research tasks. Our requirements: You should be highly motivated and possess the competence to lead a team of researchers. You should enjoy facing interdisciplinary challenges. As an application-oriented researcher you are interested in communicating and cooperating with industrial partners. We expect an outstanding M.Sc. or Diploma in Computer Science, Cognitive Psychology or a related discipline. An interest in, and preferably experience with, either Cognitive Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Development and/or Safety Critical Assistance Systems are essential. The position has a strong focus on the management of the project including the management of the human modeling activities. For this position a completed doctoral thesis and experience in leading research teams is required. If there is no tex version I will convert it into text and regex' it. However obviously it takes too much time and effort to do it.
