Although this position announcement is open for only a short period
of time, that does NOT mean that someone has been pre-selected for the
position. For the past few years, a misguided attempt to reform government
hiring -- to make it faster -- has made it impossible to advertise these
positions for the longer period that would be appropriate.
If you are interested do put in an application. An appropriate PhD
plus about 5 years of post-doctoral experience is really what is usually
required for these positions.
I might be able to answer some questions that you would have although I am
not really up to date on conditions at ONR.

It's an exciting time to be leading Human-Systems Integration science and
technology (S&T) programs for the Department of the Navy. Our missions
continue to evolve but the need to avoid technological surprise and
anticipate future Navy and Marine Corps requirements is more important than
ever. Autonomy, social media and unmanned systems in ever-widening
information networks are providing more capability but risk overwhelming
people with information and choices. We need to design systems and train
individuals and teams in a way that enables effective and efficient human
interaction with complex systems at all system levels. Decision support
systems must address tactical, operational and strategic decision-making
while exploiting machine-speed computation wherever possible. And we need to
establish the science base that will carry the Department of the Navy into
an uncertain and challenging future.

ONR is recruiting for an interdisciplinary position that crosses psychology,
computer science and engineering sciences at the interface of autonomy,
command and control and intelligent systems. We are looking for people with
strong scientific backgrounds that can bridge the gap from basic research to
applied technology development and demonstration. Successful ONR program
officers formulate the art of the possible from the state of the art. ONR
program officers must show significant S&T leadership and initiative,
program advocacy skills and management acumen as well as an ability to work
across technical domains and with the military communities we support.

Please circulate this email to all interested parties. Free to contact me or
my staff directly by email or check our web site to find out more about ONR.
