TWENTY-SECOND NORTH AMERICAN SOAR WORKSHOP AND TUTORIALS
        ========================================================

                 University of Michigan - May/June 2002
        ========================================================

Soar Technology, Inc. and the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory
at the University of Michigan are pleased to announce the
22nd North American Soar Workshop to be held June 1 & 2, 2002 in Ann
Arbor, Michigan. Soar Tutorials will be offered on May 30 & 31, in
conjunction with the Workshop.

The official web page for the 22nd Soar Workshop is:
   http://www.soartech.com/soar22workshopinfo.htm

Soar is a general cognitive architecture for developing systems that
exhibit intelligent behavior. Researchers worldwide, in the fields
of artificial intelligence and cognitive science, have been
using and evolving Soar for a variety of tasks since 1983. The present
revision of the Soar kernel, version 8.41, was released 25 March 2002.

Each year, new and current members of the Soar community -- faculty,
scientists, graduate students, technical staff and developers -- gather
together for a weekend workshop of intensive interaction and exchange
of ideas on Soar. These workshops provide the geographically
distributed members of the Soar community with the opportunity to have
face-to-face conversations, to hear about everyone's current research
status, and to have an opportunity to chart the future of Soar. The
22nd North American Soar Workshop will be held in Ann Arbor May 30-31
(Tutorials) and June 1-2 (Workshop) 2002.

It is our intention to give as many members of the community as
possible the opportunity to describe their research or to discuss
whatever Soar issues are of concern to them. This means the time
available per talk is quite short (approximately 15 minutes or less).
Since workshop attendees are typically well-aware of the current
state-of-the-art in Soar, brief talks that concentrate only on the
essentials have historically worked very well.

The Soar Workshop is announced on the soar-group mailing list and other
lists, but to ensure that everyone actively working with Soar or
interested in knowing more about Soar, but who may not have received an
announcement, is contacted, please let us know or forward this
announcement.

Proceedings from the previous three Soar workshops are available
online:

   21st Soar Workshop, May 2001 at U of M:
      http://ai.eecs.umich.edu/soar/workshop21/talks
   20th Soar Workshop, May 2000 at USC/ISI:

   19th Soar Workshop, May 1999 at U of M:
      http://ai.eecs.umich.edu/soar/workshop19/talks

WORKSHOP:

The workshop will take place from the morning of Saturday June 1 to
the afternoon of Sunday June 2. Mornings will be devoted to research
presentations, each lasting about 15 minutes including questions.
Afternoons will feature further research presentations as well as
discussion sessions and special interest focus groups. Admission to
the workshops is open to all. The registration fee is $75.

TUTORIALS:

The tutorials will take place prior to the workshop, Thursday May
30th and Friday May 31st and are designed to meet the needs of both
novice and advanced users of Soar. On Thursday, there
will be an Introduction to Soar which will cover the Soar 8 Tutorial
materials (available online at http://ai.eecs.umich.edu/soar/tutorials).
On Friday, the focus is on Advanced Soar topics, including
"Learning in Soar". If there is substantial interest in another aspect
of the Soar architecture or development in Soar, we will endeavor to
hold special focus tutorial sessions on Friday afternoon. Computing
facilities and a catered lunch meal will be provided for both days of
the tutorial sessions. Tutorial attendees are encouraged to attend the
workshop.

Registration for the tutorial sessions is required.

Please register online at http://www.soartech.com/soarworkshop/ or fax
or email the registration form below. Additional information and updates
will be announced on the Soar mailing list and posted to the workshop
web page.
