When you combine these two ideas (noting that the goal is actually the MOST active set of declarative items, cf. Neal Cowan's work), the sentence with "star" appearing twice does not cause a problem. As one reads that sentence, the visual processing of the words creates new chunks (one for each 'star') that become components of the current goal (because they need to be maintained as the reader constructs the meaning of the sentence across words). Each of these "star" goal components would likely activate a star-concept chunk in declarative memory (among other associated chunks) by virtue of the goal's source activation propagating. However, this does not mean that there could only be one star chunk in ACT-R. Indeed, after the sentence is read, there will probably be additional "star" chunks (perhaps episodic in nature) after the current goal is popped. I should also mention that Lynne and Christian and I (along with past and current post-docs Larry Daily and Melanie Cary) have written about how we have successfully expanded ACT-R's theory of working memory to account for individual differences in working memory capacity (and the impact on performance). In a summary paragraph (p. 330), he states "In summary, the broad three-part distinction postulated by the modal model [sensory store, STM, LTM] has received an extraordinary amount of criticism over the years. The original, relatively primitive versions of the model (e.g., Atkinson and Shiffrin, 1968) require important modification, principally, abandoning the idea of serial information flow and the suggestion that short-term memory is unitary and exclusively verbal. Furthermore, the model must be read with the understanding that the proposed memory structures are not claimed to have, nor are they likely to have, the exclusive function of memory storage. Once modified and interpreted in this way, the model readily deflects most of the criticisms, and its core ideas enjoy broad and diverse empirical support. As a simple model of a vastly complex domain of human memory, it undoubtedly oversimplifies in important ways. Nevertheless, several decades of research suggests that it has important insights at its core and may represent one of the more significant accomplishments of contemporary experimental psychology." In arriving at this conclusion, Paschler explores the possibility that STM corresponds to short-term neuronal firing activity as opposed to long-term synaptic strength modification. On p. 328 he notes that "It remains to be seen whether this simple neural interpretation of the STM/LTM distinction will hold up in light of future research, but data thus far are encouraging." In ACT-R, a clear distinction is made between "base-level activation (the Bi)" and "associative activation (determined by Wj and the Sji)". Want a different retrieval latency equation? If you have not visited it, you might go see the list-of-papers link from our web site. It is apparently one of the more successful things we have done in terms of community satisfaction. As a sign of the evolution of the ACT-R community I find myself even less able to even guess what has been published and so I am counting on ALL of you not to be modest and assume I know but rather to send me the pointers. This should include pointers to papers in press as well (e.g., Cognitive Science). This seems to be a way to advertise your research to interested people including those outside the ACT-R community. You might examine the current listing and see if it does include everything of yours. As you will see from the Web site we are trying to keep track of the same model (or slight variants) that is associated with multiple publications and we are trying to provide something of a meaningful classification of the models. Any guidance as to the models involved or the appropriate classification would be appreciated. Also, at least with respect to the new references you will be sending me, it would be useful to track exactly what ACT-R you are using -- 4.0, 5.0, or some other variant perhaps of your making. So if you could send me that identification that would be helpful as well.
