I think the alphabet is so highly overlearned that each letter is likely
to be element of several chunks (even intraindividually). E.g. many
letters could point to rather "fuzzy"chunks like "beginning of the
alphabet" or "mid of the alphabet". That representation could explain
the symbolic distance effect and can give a clue for entry points other
than the beginning of the alphabet.
