The question how to represent complex stimuli occurs in many domains.
The two extreme solutions are:

a) there is a chunk representing the stimulus with slots representing
the dimensions of the stimulus
b) there is a chunk representing the stimulus and other chunks
representing values on the dimensions with a slot that points to the
stimulus chunk. (John Anderson4s solution)

I have been convinced by the 1998 List Memory paper that solution b) is
the best for that domain. But what about encoding of stimuli in
categorization experiments? Should they also be represented according to
solution b)? What criteria should be applied for the decision between
several possibilities of representation?
