<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">CLINATEC (CEA, Leti), based in Grenoble, France, is looking for a PhD student specialized in digital signal processing and machine learning to join its Brain-Computer Interfaces team.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">This PhD project will contribute to new solutions for rehabilitation and functional substitution using a brain-machine interface (BMI) neuroprosthesis. Neuroprostheses record and decode the neural signal from
the brain to directly activate effectors (exoskeleton, implantable spinal cord stimulator, etc.), without the physiological control interrupted by a spinal cord injury.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">A set of algorithms decoding the neuronal activity recorded in the cerebral cortex (Electrocorticogram) has already been developed at CLINATEC, and tested in two clinical research protocols: in tetraplegics in
Grenoble to control complex robotic effectors, and in paraplegics in Lausanne to control an electrical epidural stimulator.
<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">The PhD student will contribute to the next ambitious scientific advances to test new control paradigms and/or additional degrees of freedom. They will develop innovative neural decoders using incremental machine
learning algorithms, which will be explored and tested first in offline, then in real time with patients in the ongoing clinical trials.

<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">This PhD is funded by the HORIZON-MSCA Doctoral Networks program. The objective of an MSCA research programme is to address technical and therapeutic breakthroughs in multiple PhD projects across Europe. The PhD
students will continuously interact to converge on effective combinatorial treatments and functional compensations for people with severe motor disabilities, e.g. due to spinal cord injuries. Trips of several months are planned to visit some of the laboratories
in the European programme, particularly in Switzerland and Italy.<o:p></o:p></p>
