Dear colleagues,

We are looking for a few postdoctoral scholars who are willing to explore the following research topics.

The cognitive neurorobotics research unit at OIST https://groups.oist.jp/cnru focuses on understanding brain-based mechanisms for cognition and action by conducting synthetic brain modeling studies with using robotic experiment platforms. For this purpose, we have developed a set of deep recurrent neural network (RNN) models based on the concept of predictive coding. These models include the ones for hierarchical predictive learning of compositional action patterns as well as of dynamic visual patterns in pixel level, and extensions of those models to variational Bayes predictive RNN model. Now, we are looking for a few postdoctoral scholars who are motivated to investigate possible reconstruction of "general" cognitive minds of infants up to age of 4 in synthetic neurorobotics experiments. The reconstruction will be conducted by integrating the aforementioned models and other deep learning schemes such as dynamic external memory network and relational net, and by conducting relatively long-term (from a few months to a few years) successive tutoring with exploratory trials for both real and simulated robots in multiple task domains. Ultimate goal of the project is to understand how robots as well as human infants can learn about the world with generalization while encountering the poverty of stimulus problem by going through tripartite interactions among active learning, neuronal as well as body development, and parental care during their developmental processes.

Successful candidates must be highly motivated to work on the aforementioned interdisciplinary project and collaborate with other members of the group. They should have a degree in computer science, robotics, or related engineering fields. A strong background in neural network modeling with analysis will be highly appreciated. Accepted postdoctoral scholars will work as annual contract base with possible extension with maximum total period of 3 years.

Those who are interested in the position should send an email to tani1216jp@gmail.com with CV.

Jun Tani, Dr. Eng.

Professor, Cognitive Neurorobotics Research Unit,

Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST)

Lab2-A626, https://groups.oist.jp/cnru
