PHD POSITION IN COMPUTER GRAPHICS, LAB. FOR ACTION REPRESENTATION
AND LEARNING, HERTIE INST. FOR CLINICAL BRAIN RESEARCH, TUEBINGEN, GERMANY

Within the DFG-funded package project 'Perceptual Graphics' we offer a
PhD position (BAT IIa/2) for the
development of algorithms in computer animation. The grant aims at the
transfer of methods and knowledge
from biological science to systems in computer graphics. It also
involves partners from the Max Planck
Institute for Biological Cybernetics (Tuebingen) and the computer
graphics departments of the universities
 in Bonn, Konstanz, and Tuebingen.

The specific research topic will be the development of machine learning
algorithms for the efficient
representation of body movements in computer animation, based on
concepts derived from motor control
in biological systems.

Good mathematical skills and an interest in machine learning will be
required. Ideal candidates should have
a background in computer science, mathematics, physics, or engineering.
Also students from bioinformatics
with an interest in computer graphics are highly welcome.

The Laboratory for Action Representation and Learning (ARL) disposes of
a high-end motion capture
system (VICON) and modern software tools for computer animation, and a
motion laboratory that is
also appropriate for biomechanical and clinical studies. In the context
of this project the group collaborates internationally with the Dept. of
Brain and Cognitive Science (M.I.T) and the Dept. of Computer
Science (Weizmann Institute, Israel).

Interested candidates should send or email CVs and the names of 2
references to
