Call for a PhD Scholarship ($20,037 pa tax-free for 3 years)

Location: School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering,
University of NSW @ Australian Defence Force Academy, Canberra, Australia.

The school of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (ITEE) at
the Australian Defence Force Academy campus of the University of New South
Wales is seeking expressions of interest from highly qualified students to
join the PhD program. The PhD scholarship provides living allowances of
$20,037 per annum tax-free.

Topic: Evolutionary methods in the design of robust control systems

The proposed thesis topic will involve the student looking at the
application of evolutionary computation and related methods to optimization
problems arising in the design of robust feedback control systems. It is
expected that this research will lead to new general methods for robust and
nonlinear control system design. In addition specific applications will be
considered including missile auto-pilot systems, UAV flight control systems
and vibration control systems.

Application Process: The successful applicant is anticipated to have a
first-class honour or equivalent in Electrical Engineering or other relevant
areas. All applicants are expected to possess good programming skills and
excellent communication and research skills. An ideal applicant for the
project would have knowledge in control systems, neural networks, and
evolutionary computation. Applications should include a detailed CV, a
certified copy of academic transcripts and a cover letter detailing the
applicants' research interest and its relevance to the project. The
applicant should satisfy UNSW admission requirements for the PhD program.
Potential applicants should discuss the application and send the paper work
to Prof. Ian Petersen i.petersen at adfa.edu.au or Dr. Hussein Abbass
abbass at itee.adfa.edu.au. Deadline for applications is 15th of November 2005
or until the position is filled, for a possible starting date of March 2006.
Applications should be sent by email or fax +61-2-62688581
