     Ph.D. Position Available - Deadline November 15, 2002
     -----------------------------------------------------

The Delft Pattern Recognition Group, The Netherlands, is seeking for an
outstanding Ph.D. student with a background in engineering, physics or
computer science, having good computer programming skills, an interest
in pattern recognition or artificial intelligence and preferably
experienced in spectral data analysis.

The Ph.D. student will participate in an applied project on

     Hyperspectral image analysis

funded by the Technology Foundation STW. In the project industrial
applications of hyperspectral imaging are studied with an emphasis on
the integration of the spectral and spatial information. Automatic
learning procedures based on unsupervised and partially supervised
techniques will be basic components to be studied, used and developed
further in this project.

The research will be done in cooperation with, among others, Unilever
Research Vlaardingen, AgriVision, Wageningen and the Institute of
Applied Physics in Delft. The Ph.D. position is granted for 4 years.
The nomination is formally for 2 years and is expected to be extended
for another 2 years.

The project is integrated in the research on statistical pattern
recognition fundamentals and applications of the Delft Pattern
Recognition Group. This research is done by 7 researchers while the
entire group consists of about 35 researchers. The Ph.D. student will
be a member of ASCI, the Advanced School for Computers and Imaging, a
nationwide Ph.D.school.
