Hello,

My department advertises a tenure-track faculty position, with axes of
interest that include Statistical Machine Learning.

The department has a statistical machine learning lab (currently with
Balasz Kegl and I) with about 15 graduate students and post-docs, and
access to several linux clusters for high-performance computing.

The official advert is below. Please feel free to contact me for more
information. Teaching is in French but non-francophones are usually
given a break the first year, to learn enough French to teach.

Université de Montréal
Faculté des arts et des sciences
Department of Computer Science and Operations Research

The DIRO (Département d'informatique et de recherche opérationnelle -
Department of Computer Science and Operations Research) invites
applications for several tenure-track positions, starting June 1st,
2003. Applicants seeking positions at the Assistant Professor level
will have priority.

The Department is seeking qualified candidates in Computer
Science. Preference will be given to applicants with a strong research
program in one of the areas of Software Engineering, Systems (design
and implementation of programming languages, compilation, parallel
processing), or Computer Networking and Distributed Systems (including
electronic commerce). Other areas of interest are Machine Learning
(statistical learning, data mining) and Operations Research
(stochastic modelling and optimization in particular).

A background combining more than one of the above areas, or combining
Computer Science and Operations Research, is an asset. An excellent
candidate working in a field different from those listed above would
also receive consideration.

Beyond demonstrating a clear potential for outstanding research, the
successful candidate must be committed to excellence in teaching. The
candidate is expected to have a working knowledge of French, and be
prepared to teach and supervise students in French within one year.

The Université de Montréal is the leading French-language university
in North America. The DIRO offers B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees in
Computer Science and Operations Research, a B.Sc. in Bioinformatics,
several bidisciplinary B.Sc. degrees, as well as an M.Sc. in
electronic commerce. With 41 faculty members, 600 undergraduates and
close to 200 graduate students, the DIRO is one of the largest
Computer Science departments in Canada as well as one of the most
active in research. Research interests of current faculty include
bioinformatics, computer networking, intelligent tutoring systems,
computer architecture, software engineering, artificial intelligence,
computational linguistics, computer graphics, vision and solid
modelling, automatic learning, theoretical and quantum computing,
parallelism, optimization, and simulation. See
http://www.iro.umontreal.ca.

Task: Undergraduate and graduate teaching, research and supervision of
      graduate students.
Requirements : Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related area.
Salary : Starting salary is competitive and fringe benefits are
         excellent.

Hardcopy applications including a curriculum vitae, a description of
the candidate's current research program, at least three letters of
reference, and up to three selected preprints/reprints, should be sent
to:

Pierre McKenzie, professeur et directeur
Département d'informatique et de recherche opérationnelle, FAS
Université de Montréal
C.P. 6128, Succ. Centre-Ville
Montréal (Québec) Canada H3C 3J7

by February 1st, 2003. Applications received after that date may be
considered until the positions are filled.

In accordance with Canadian Immigration requirements, priority will be
given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents. The Université de
Montréal is committed to equity in employment and encourages
applications from qualified women.
