CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

2 Postdoctoral Fellowships in Neuroscience

Applications are invited for 2 postdoctoral research positions,
available immediately, to join a collaborative research program
between the laboratories of Partha Mitra at Bell Laboratories (Murray
Hill, New Jersey) and Prof. R. Andersen at the California Institute of
Technology (Pasadena, California). The research project will examine
the temporal correlation structure of activity within and between
local and distant cortical areas in parietal and frontal areas during
cognitive tasks, involving memory and planning of eye and arm
movements. Multi-site recordings of single cell activity and local
field potentials will be made in behaving monkeys and the data
analyzed using modern statistical methods for stochastic processes and
machine learning techniques. The experimentalist will be located at
Caltech, and the theorist at Bell Labs. The goal of the research is
to elucidate the underlying functional architecture and multi-site
dynamics of neural activity in local and long-range circuits involved
in working memory.

Theorist Position #400 - The successful candidate should have training
in an analytical subject, preferably in theoretical physics, as well
as computational experience and/or experience with statistical
analysis. The candidate should be motivated to work in understanding
neural systems. The position offers an opportunity to work closely
with an experiment, and will be part of a strong multidisciplinary
team in a rich research environment.

Experimentalist Position #500 - The successful candidate should have
training in electrical engineering or experimental physics either at
the Bachelor's or Ph.D. level or substantial background with
electrical hardware and computer programming. Experience working in a
neuroscience laboratory using electrophysiological recording is
desirable. The position offers the opportunity to interact directly
with theorists and will provide a rich opportunity for
multidisciplinary study of the nervous system.

Applications should include a curriculum vitae and two letters of
recommendation. This material should be sent to Ms. Cierina R. Marks,
California Institute of Technology, MC 216-76, 1201 E. California
Blvd., Pasadena, CA 91125. Please indicate the position number that
you are applying for. Caltech is an affirmative action, equal
opportunity employer. Women, minorities, veterans, and disabled
persons are encouraged to apply.
