Dear Colleagues,

Appended is an announcement of opportunities for a Chair of
Bioinformatics and a Lectureship in Intelligent Systems at University
College London, part of London University. Readers should note that a
Lectureship in the U.K. is roughly the equivalent of an Assistant
Professorship in the U.S.

Best wishes,

Sean.

UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON

Department of Computer Science

and

Centre for Mathematics and Physics in the Life Sciences and Experimental
Biology (CoMPLEX)

CHAIR OF BIOINFORMATICS

Applications are sought for this new chair, funded through a joint
initiative of the UK Research Councils.*

The appointee will be expected to create and lead a new, world-class
Bioinformatics Unit in the Department of Computer Science at UCL,
applying state-of-the-art mathematical and computer science techniques
to problems now arising in the life sciences, driven by the
post-genomic era. The Unit will also work closely with the UCL Centre
for Mathematics and Physics in the Life Sciences and Experimental
Biology (CoMPLEX) which has a proven track record for
interdisciplinary collaboration in these areas. A joint appointment
will be made in Computer Science and a Life Sciences department
appropriate to the specific life sciences interest of the appointee.

We are seeking an individual to lead innovative, interdisciplinary
research at the interface between mathematics, computer science and
the life sciences. Our aim is to provide the intellectual and
practical tools for deriving models of the interactions that determine
function of molecules, cells, tissues, and organisms. The successful
candidate will have an outstanding reputatation, with experience of
leading interdisciplinary research, working effectively with industry
and, where appropriate, of successfully managing the commercial
application of research.

Applications from individuals in any relevant discipline are encouraged.

The successful candidate will benefit from a rich environment of
relevant collaborative work at UCL. The Research Councils are also
providing funding for a lectureship and a significant level of
infrastructure support. The appointed Chair will be involved in
appointing this lecturer.

*In recognition of the crucial role of bioinformatics, the
Biotechnology and Biological Research Council (BBSRC), the Engineering
and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the Medical Research
Council (MRC), the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and the
particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC), are funding a
new Unit and Chair at UCL.

Lectureship in Intelligent Systems

In addition to the above, we are creating a further new lectureship in
the area of Intelligent Systems or Bioinformatics. Applications are
invited from candidates with research experience in either of these
areas.

Prospective applicants are invited to make informal enquiries to and
can obtain further particulars from Professor Steve Wilbur, Head,
Department of Computer Science, (telephone +44 (0)20 7679 1397, fax
+44 (0)20 7387 1397, e-mail: s.wilbur at cs.ucl.ac.uk) or Professor Anne
Warner, FRS, Director of CoMPLEX (telephone +44 (0)20 7679 7279, fax
+44 (0)20 7387 3014, e-mail: a.warner at .ucl.ac.uk), Gower Street,
London WC1E 6BT, UK. Further details can also be found at
http://www.ucl.ac.uk/CoMPLEX.

Applications (10 copies for UK-based candidates, one copy for overseas
candidates), including a curriculum vitae and the names and addresses
of three referees (at least one of whom should be based in a country
other than the candidate's country of residence), should be sent to
the Provost and President, UCL, Gower Street, London, WC1E 6BT, UK, to
arrive no later than 6 November 2000.
