DOCUMENT IMAGE MODELING AND SEGMENTATION USING STATISTICAL 2-D
APPROACHES


Early processing stages of document analysis systems such as the
localization and segmentation of text fields, logos, graphics, lines,
etc. usually rely on heuristic methods or must be defined by hand. The
goal of this thesis is to elaborate a principled approach to these
problems based on statistical approaches such as Markov Random Fields
and 2-D Hidden Markov Models.

This is an exciting opportunity to work on a real world problem within
an environment which includes an industrial partner as well as a
University research lab. Several possibilities for financing a 3 year
PhD work exist depending on the qualification and on the nationality
of the candidate.
