To those of you who teach analysis of neural networks to students of modest
background in statistics:

I recently came across this very readable explanation of principal
components analysis, cluster analysis, and multidimensional scaling (and
more):

_Multivariate_Statistical_Methods:_A_Primer. Bryan F. J. Manly. 1994.
Chapman & Hall: New York. (paperback)

Chapters of particular relevance to (my experience with) neural nets:

1 The material of multivariate analysis
-- 5 examples of data/problems where multivariate analysis is useful
            (mostly from evolutionary biology)

2 Matrix Algebra
-- 9 page explanation of essentials (matrix operations, eigenvalues,
                covariance matricies, etc.)

6 Principal Components Analysis
        -- with 2 detailed examples

9 Cluster analysis

11 Multidimensional Scaling
