        Research Engineer

        Time Series Prediction and Signal Compression

Applications are invited for the position of Research Engineer with the
Systems Engineering and Design Automation Laboratory (SEDAL) at the
University of Sydney. SEDAL has a number of collaborative projects in the
area of time series forecasting and signal compression spanning the
applications of financial forecasting, electricity load forecasting and
heart signal recoginition and compression. The applicant will be expected
to contribute to these projects by developing novel forecasting and coding
software models based on neural networks and other statistical
techniques. The project collaborators include a major international bank,
a major utility supplier and a world leader in implantable cardiac
pacemakers.

For appointment at HEO Level 6 applicant must have a Degree in Electrial
Engineering or Mathematics as well as knowledge and experience of C
programming (preferably in a Unix environment), time series forecasting
and/or source coding. The successful candidate will be encourged to enrol
in an area of one of these disciplines if applicable.


For appointment at Level 7, applicants must in additon to the above, have
extensive experience in the area of Neural Computing, Information Theory
or Statistics or in the design of signal processing systems and their
implementation in either software or hardware. Experience in development
and implementation of data compression systems, and the ability to
supervise final year students and junior research staff also is
essential. Experience in integrated circuit design and/or biomedical
signal processing and masters degree or higher in Neural Computing,
Information Theory or Statistics are desirable.

The position is available for an initial period of one and a half years
and is renewable up to a further 3 years subject to progress and funding.
Applicants must be able to take up the position within 2 months of
receiving an offer.

Salary: Higher Education Officer Level 6, $34,026 to $36,842 depending on
experience.
        Higher Education Officer Level 7, $37,546 to $41,065 depending on
experience and qualifications.
