Cultured Neural Nets?

At the 1987 IEEE NN conference I heard a talk by a guy named Gross (I
believe at U of Texas) who was describing a plan to grow neurons
in culture dishes covered with electrodes.  After the neurons developed
connections, the numerous electrodes would be used to stimulate and
record from the "natural" neural net.  A search of recent literature
on MedLine did not turn up any such papers.  Does anyone have any more
news on this?  Is anyone else out there doing similar work?
